I'm not sure if its highly contagious, but i know guppies and bettas get it a lot. Also check your ph, when my betta had it, i had a high ph so i think it was a mix of fin rot and alkali burn. I used 2 products (although the betta didn't make it but i think that was just unlucky). I used Melafix by API which seemed to be quite good at removing the ick/fungus that was occuring at the same time. And for the fin rot itself i used Baktopur by sera, which was very good (although you can only use other treatments after 3 days i think it is, when using the baktopur. Any other questions please ask.

Edit: the guy at my LFS said he used baktopur and it worked fine.
