Hi people,

My sister purchased me a Brine Shrimp hatchery set for my birthday so I am going to try and grow some nice size ones to feed to my fish. However I need some advice for what is the best way to go about this.

I went out a brought a cheap 20 litre tank which included a small filter, I have also put a small heater in the tank and an air stone and filled it with water from my Brackish puffer tank, the shrimplets have hatched and I have put a load into the tank, I covered the bottom of the filter with the ends of a pair of tights so that the shrimp dont get sucked up, but I have had to turn the filter off because the shrimplets were getting stuck to the tights.

Will the tank be OK with just the air stone running with the filter turned off? shall I just ditch the filter?
Also what would the best food be to feed the brine shrimp?
And what tank maintenence should I do and how often?

Thank you

Brine shrimp are really easy to grow on.

Ditch the filter and just use some rigid airline to bubble at the bottom of the tank. Doesn't even need an airstone.

Then just let it bubble away at room temperature. Just change 2/3rds of the water each week (but you MUST make sure that that the salinity of the waterchange is the same as what is already in the tank)

I always found it best to feed them a specialist filter feeder food such as roti-rich - but there are plenty of others. Some even feed them on yeast - but I never found this to work.

Just feed them enough to 'colour' the water.

I always fed shortly before harvesting so that the fish get a snack that is loaded with food.

If you don't overharvest the population will be self-sustaining.
