Help Needed Starting Out With Plants

is soil subtrate necessary for my low growth set up? Maybe i could put it in half? I will only be growing the less demanding plants so im not sure.? Adivce? I am happy to treat with fertilizer and stuff.
Can you plant them in tiny pots with the substrate in there with them? Advice if any? the tank is only just begining so moving some sand and adding substrate is an easy thing to do now but not later so i thought after some reading i should still check as people are divided about it

Someone who can grow plants outsite of water can surely learn to grow them in water! Right?

You can add those plants without any soil at all. PetSmart has some clay looking stuff that's specifically meant for growing aquatic plants but I didn't see the need. That's what I added gravel to the black sand for, to hold the plants down. Then I realized that some of these plants do better attached to a rock or piece of driftwood. That gives the added benefit of being able to re-position the plants to fill an area and you can move them temporarily to clean all around them.

My tank has only been going for 2 months and when I'm done I hoping the plants really grow in.

I just added a java fern plant to my tank today. I used a rubber band and attached it to my driftwood ornament. I use an API product called co2 booster. So far so good, but after all I only had it in there for 2 hours. :)

Hi ruskull in your picture link thing do you not have any soil just plants tied to stuff? i thought it didnt need soil substrate for the few easy plans i want to grow. I could probably get a tiny pot and plant one in some soil in the tank, with the soil covered somehow obviously to avoid a mess? has anyone done this before?
i am going to buy ferts and maybe a cheap CO2 thing (not exactly sure what it does) to help promote initial growth as i scape the tank but i dont want a jungle in there so i thought the fertilizer and maybe CO2 and proper lighting would suffice?

Is this worth buying, its cheap and pretty.

Its called a Spio III Diffuser
