Hi all

Newbie to fishkeeping who needs advise please.I have a newish 3 foot tank with undergravel filter and live plants. I fishless cycled for 6 weeks and when it was complete I added 6 zebra danios. After a few weeks began very slowly adding fish until I now have

6 zebra danios
I dwarf gourami
I platy
2 male guppies
2 bolivian rams

All have been happily living together for about 2 months now. My danios have spawned and so have the rams but im beginning to get a few problems and I dont know why!

Water readings are always spot on - I test with the proper liquid API master test kit once a week, and readings are PH 7.6, Amonia 0 , Nitrite 0, Nitates 0 - temp is 24C. I hoover the gravel and do a 30% water change and once a week, and always use Tetra aquasafe to remove chlorine. I never fill from the hot water to make sure that it doesnt come from the tank incase of copper.

They are fed twice a day (I use a good quality flake, and frozen daphnia , blood worm and brine shrimp on different days) I also feed peas and veg occasionally. I feed just as much as they can eat - & always leave them scouring the tank for bits so that they are not overfed and it gives them something to do!

My problem is my gourami has developed a white film which covers parts of both eyes. It seems to clear up but always comes back. I have used ESHA 2000 twice on the recommendation of my local fish shop but it doesnt seem to have made any difference! (by the way I took the carbon filters out while medicating).

Now some of my danios have problems! One looks bloated and keeps sinking. I know that they can get gas but hes been like it for 4 days now. He is eating ok but is not right. Another has a small sore patch and is also bloated!

Any ideas anyone on where I am going wrong please? I have been so careful and read up as much as I can but im at a loss!

Cloudy eye is a symtom of a desease not a desease it it own right,
Causes bad water quaiity
Stress.
Irratation.
Poor diet.
Old age.
Parasites.
Bacterial infection.

You say one fish is bloated are the scales of the fish sticking out.
With the sore on the fish, any signs of flicking and rubbing against objects in the tank.
I would try anti internal bacteria med by interpet.

Well it cant be poor water quality because everything is spot on and I know that rams are susceptible to poor water quality and they are fine and spawning! Cant be poor diet either. No signs of sticking out scales or flicking so I dont think its dropsy, and as ive already tried the baterial treatment I guess its got to be parasite treatment next!

Thanks Tweety!

Sores on fish can be a sign of parasites.
Uk meds are not that good, there only good on mild bacterial infections.
The sore does it have a white ediging.
What med did you use, and how long.

With the fish being a gourami I would take a look here.

I used ESHA 2000 which is a wide range action treating over 18 symptoms and disease organisms. ESHA 2000 treats a wide range of fungal, bacterial and parasitic infections, helps heal wounds and protects the skin layer. I dosed as per instructions which is a 3 day course then left it for a few days and dosed again. (says its harmless to fish and plants no matter ho often used).

The sore on the danio started off as a discoloured greyish patch, then turned pinkish (not red) then seemed to heal and shrink but its come back pink and enlarged again - cant see a white edge. Doesnt seem to bother the fish at all and its zooming around and eating as normal.

I wouldn't trust that esha med it makes out it treats everything, never trust a med that says it treats ntd when there no cure.
I lost fish to sores and no uk bacterial meds seem to cure them.
You could try a vet to see if they would perscribe an antibiotic but you would have to issolate for treatment as antibiotics wipe the beneifical bacteria out in the filter.

Do any fish try to flick and rub as sores can be down to parasites.

Greyish white patches can be columnaris to parasties.
The grey patch can soon turn into a red ulcerating patch with columnaris.
Is it possible to load a pic up of the sick fish.
