I'm at this moment at home having taken a week from work cleaning my sand before it goes in the tank, I have the smallest amount of sand in a bucket & after say ten attempts it's not coming clean but I think I'm doing it wrong so

When the sand is in the bucket & I add water the water is clear but when I start to swish the sand around it becomes a murky colour but after it settles back down (say five seconds) the water becomes clear again... So I was thinking after this long surely the water will always become murky if I keep swishing it around but this is giving me the impression the sand isn't clean ??

When you stop swirling and the sand settles in say, 5 seconds and the water then clears up, i would consider it clean.

This is how mine looked after i did the above. Here

Great that's what I thought because your always going to kick sand up by swishing it around but I was thinking this is still dirty... Thanks for your reply as I was loosing the will to live :good:

you'll be surprized...mine never swishes around

The sand is now in, touch cloudy but nothing the filter wont sort out but I'm after a few more pointers if you will..

Should you slop the sand towards the back (towards the filter) or towards the front ?? I forgotten that bit, also if I can see holes in the sand through the glass should I be filling them up/getting rid of them as I think there air holes ??

i ran a fork around mine to get rid of the bubbles, i also sloped it downwards, i.e. less at the front than the back, but its not overly necessary.
