I am very new to keeping fish, and my neighbour helped me set up the tank. We had some initial teething problems where we lost a few, but since the nitraite etc has been sorted they have been fine.

Last night the tank needed a bit of a clean so I cleaned the gravel and ened up doing just under a 15% water change in the process. Usual method which has caused no probs. Since this morning 4 female guppies have died.

We have had the water tested - apparently its fine. The tetra we have are all ok including the platy we have. Another guppy looks decidedly poorly.

One of the guppies we bought was pregnant and we didn't know - we caught all the fry the other day and put them in my neighbours tank in a breeding tank. Yesterday I noticed a fry (less than a week old) which we missed, and still elusive. I saw him just a moment ago (don't know he's a he yet!!) and he seems fine! I would have thought he would be the first to suffer.

Please help I don't know what else to do.

I am a complete novice so please be patient ;)

thanks
Sarah

:hi:

if you got your guppies from a pet shop thay are usualy very weak and i find that just about anything will kill them,

oh dear thats not good - but 4 in 8 hours? 5th on the way :(

yeah i would def recommend something hardier, like platies. its hard not to kill a guppy

oh dear my poor daughter she is quite upset - how about danios as well?

I forgot to mention we have a platy too and it seems fine - touchwood!!

if you realy want guppies get some from breeders not pet shops, the ones from breeders are much hardier but are also more expensive, but thay breed like wild fire so you'll soon have hundreds,

its the wrong time of year to get them from breeders but you could email and ask when thay will have some if you realy want them,

some breeders,

unfortunately I am not sure as my partner went (I am ill) and he didn't get the exact readings.

No more losses now 3 remaining guppies seem happy along with the tetras and platys
