Ok so my betta has fin rot, and i read that Bettafix could help, but my betta's tank was WAY to big for the bottle, so i used mealifix. I read that this could suffocate my betta after the second day of treatmet. I paniked (im a really bad speller) and moved him to a n emercincy tank (SP?) Im using a carbon filter in his 10 gal now while he waits in the tank. Anything else i can do? :(

How much treatment did you add? did you follow the bottles instructions??

Also where have you heard that this will suffocate your betta? im confused by this.

Easiest way to remove it is to do a big water change...

I used Melafix to treat my male betta when he'd had his fins ripped off by a female - I used half doses because I already read that Melafix can be a little too strong for some fish - I think bettas may be a little sensitive to it. Anyway, my betta made a rapid recovery and eventually his fins grew back and he lived a further 3 years.

So, I can't understand why some would say it's poisonous to bettas (maybe if using a full dose or even accidental overdosing when it's not measured out correctly??).

To be honest, if your betta has bad fin rot I don't think Melafix is going to be much of a cure. It can help aid in the healing process of fin damage (along with water changes) but for major diseases I would use something else e.g. Myxazin, or similar good bactericide med.

1 teaspoon a day for 2 days.I read it as a warning several times online. He has started to swim but hasnt eaten.... ill do a big water change this evening.

I followed the instrutions too. He may just be sensitive to it?

Sounds like you did everything right if your worried about the melafix.
I had disaterous results with melafix and an otherwise very healthy betta ( apart from damaged fin from a small tear). I did not over medicate and he was dead by morning. Some folks haven't had problems but from my experince id never recommend it with bettas. Just personal opinion I suppose based on experirnce. But why risk it when clean water does the same thing?. If waterchanges don't help then you need actual medicine...not a tonic like melfix.
just my 2 cents.
best of luck.
cheers

Oh I'm so sorry :( best of luck with your new one. Might be too soon but you eventually will :get another) then you can come back( or stick around) and show off your new fish :D
sorry again. Live and learn I guess :/
all the best
cheers

He looked like he was in a bunch of pain. Atleast he wont suffer anymore.

It's true, I used melafix and didn't read the direction well enough. It started to make him grow white stuff around him and than eventually killing him. It maybe medicine but too much dose will kill your betta instead.
