Hey everyone first I am new to the forum. I have had fish before but never dreamed of breeding them until just recently when I fell in love with guppies and the fry! So we got some from a pet store and we lost all of them but the zebra danios and a bigger kind of tetra I cant remember the exact name but at any rate I had put real flowers in the tank from Wal-Mart and I was told this was what brought my problem on we had an awful fungus in our tank. So I was able to save one of the five guppies that I had bought and a frog and two tetras, I kept them in the tank and treated it and on day seven completely changed out my water. We waited until last Saturday to add to our tank and we went to pet smart, I found some very beautiful fish but my two year old found the Mickey Mouse Platys the lady at the pet smart fair warned me that the platys could be pregnant and I said that was fine because I had planed on breeding fish anyways, so I added the three platys to the tank with my three pregnant guppies and then this morning about 5:30 I checked my fish tank and found two tiny fish swimming I figured out quickly that there was no way that these were guppies as I had expected but I netted the two quick swimmers and put them in breeding net. I noticed thier color a light orange color and then I called the pet smart the lady there told me that the older fish would not be able to eat the mickey mouse platy fry because they hide in the rocks but the two that were swimming had not, she said that was just because I found them as soon as they were born and they had not hid in the rocks. I figured this was the truth because as soon as I found the second one and tried to net it and it buried down in the rocks. But then I found on here that the older fish will eat the fry, if they hide in the rocks will they be able to find them?? I only found two so I am wondering if there were others that had gotten eaten by the guppies and the platys already?? Please if you have any ideas on this hiding in the rocks thing please let me know!

Fry will hide away from the bigger fish so they don't become a meal.
You can buy breeder boxes that hang in the tank, you place the fry in then till they are big enough to sell, or keep.
The lfs lady is wrong the fry will be eaten by adult fish, even platys.

Thank you for the reply. I am affraid that they have possibly some of them already been eaten or I stressed her out by putting them in the breeder net but I didnt put her in there so in a few days I may see some other fry? I was so excited to see just the two that I had managed to save that it had me ready to run out the door screaming! My two first baby fry! Cant wait for me they were so tiny I had trouble finding them but she did lay down on the rocks for a while after I found the first two in a corner and then when she was out with the others I found a small indention like she had maybe dug a shallow hole in the rocks then when I went back later the whole was covered. So maybe thats where they are at? Now my next question I have one other platy who I suspect is more than likely pregnant and the fry that are in the net are staying hidden in the plants in the breeder net is it safe to put my other pregnant fish in with the fry as long as they are staying hidden?

Off to bed in a minute its late here.
The breeding nets are no good for the fry as fish can jump in them and still eat them.
The best are the plastic clear boxes with lids to stop fish getting into them.
You can buy the boxes with tiny airstones as well which help circulate the water around the box.

No don't add the pregnant female to the breeder net she will eat the fry.
