Hmm half a gallon seems a little small for a betta. I would suggest putting your betta in the heated 5 gallon - he will enjoy it much more in there - and maybe adding some ghostshrimp or a couple of ADFs as well.

But before adding ANY fish make sure you have read sylvia's post. That's important.

my bettas love their 2 gallon tanks! they swim all over the place

LOL thats what I was thinking. I'd say move the betta to the 5 gallon and use the 1/2 gallon to culture brine shrimp for betta food. Or something similar.
