hey guys. went fishing today at a local park with the family and i decided to try dipnetting.
it was my first time so i was pretty bad a it
managed to catch a lot of what look like guppies, 3 that look like dalmation mollies and these two in question.

i'm confident they are cichlids. the park is full of south american and african cichlids of all sorts.

thanks for the help :good:

 wow those are nice fish lol

your lucky you get to keep them?

wow beats the hell out of paying like 30 bucks for a nice lookin fish like that lol

and it must be fun to catch!! lol

I honestly don't know. They definatley are pretty though.

i thought so too. i dont keep cichlids, but i decided these were pretty enough to try to raise myself. once they get to a good enough size i will rehome them as they wont do well with my rainbows as adults. beautiful though.

well i just found out some parks in my county made it legal to fish in them. i got a freshwater fishing license and went at it. i'm really looking forward to going with the local aquarium society I just joined recently. they go dipnetting and catch big fish...and really cool ones from what i've heard.
i'm keeping them only until they get big enough to be able to trade them at a local store or rehome them to a friend. they are less than 1/2" in size right now, so i doubt they would cost $30!

can you post pictures of the other ones you caught?

im so intregued lol

here you go:

these look somewhat like dalmation mollies, but i'm not 100% sure 'cause the body shape seems a little off.

these look like colorless guppies but could just be fries for something else. i'm not really sure.

Definately cichlids..potentially young tilapia but may be wrong here as still juveniles.

i dont think they would be tilapia because i dont think there's tilapia in these lakes. these are manmade lakes inside a local
park. as i said before, the majority of the fish are cichlids so i wouldnt doubt these are too. i just dont know much about cichlids

after some research it appears that:

1. the guppy look-a-likes are actually gambusia afinis, known as "mosquito fish." these apparently are all over the place and are the ones not to get while dipnetting.

2. the dalmation ones are actually gambusia sp., just a color variation of the above mosquito fish. that's why the body shape was so similar and they were found together.

3. the cichlid is most likely cichlosama nigrofasciatum, or "Convict cichlid", or a variation thereof.

oh well, i will learn eventually to catch something better! in the meantime, i'm going to raise those convicts until i can find them a nice home :good:

hey guys. caught something new today. went fishing at a nearby lake inside a public park. it was supposedly filled with bass, catfish and blue-gill for people to come fish...all we caught were cichlids!
released them all except this guy, who went to a friend's cichlid tank...any idea what he is?

he was about 7" long, pretty feisty and a lot of red on him. the ones we caught were less colorful so we let those go, none of them ended up dead or cooked!
