im getting a new 75 gallon tank and iwant a carpet for it so i was looking at planted tank and i have come to a decision of what i kind of like. the probelem is i dont know plant very welll so i dont no which 1 is good. i like a grassy look mixed with a moss like a nice soft carpet. i like the glosos one which i will also have and i like the riccia but those would only be for small portions of the tank (corners and on bogwood) i need a bottom plant so could some one help me cause i am really clued out when it comes to plants :S

My Webpage i kind of like this bottom plant but it might be a little bit to long im looking for something around 3-4 inches but if theres 1 i like i wount mind trmming it :/

My Webpage

this is kind of what im looking for it like a grass\moss look but again alittle to long i also dont have to much lighting but i can gett better lights just please tell me so i know :D

hi,
hairgrass is great. i'd get three or four pots to begin with and set small clumps (of about 9 or 10 hairs per clump) roughly half an inch apart.

it would do best with something in the gravel to feed it but it too.

i did the method above in a 2wpg tank and it grew like crazy, forming a carpet realy well.

i'd cut it as soon as you set it to about 2 inches high, then as it grows and settles in cut it to about an inch high - this will make it thicken up.

hope thats some help?
Simon.

PS - it may be best to rest the pots on the floor before planting for about three / four days.

In a 75G you'll need around 150 Watts with reflectors minimum to get a decent carpet of most species. A nutrient-rich substrate will help with most species too (except Riccia - no roots). CO2 injection is also recommended at these lighting levels.

IME Sagittaria species are an easy plant to carpet. Ideal for bigger tanks as they can grow quite large (see my sig).

any lights that you would recomend cause i dont no anything about light really :*) the tank 48"long so im guessing that be the size of light unless i went with a duel 24 any reconmendations on that either? o ya could you enter a rough price just so i no

There's a few options with lighting a largish tank like yours. T8 or T5 fluorescent are the most popular. Metal Halide is an option but is a lot more expensive.

T8 would be the cheapest - approx. £10 to £15 per tube, £7 per reflector and £30 per double control unit (ballast).

Do you live in the UK?

This article should help - it concentrates on T8s in the UK but most of the info is useful anyway. http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=96754

An ideal T8 lighting set-up would be 4 x 42" 38W tubes with reflectors and 2 x double electronic control units (ballasts). This would give 152 Watts and should be ideal for growing most plants, especially with CO2.

May I also recommend surrey pet supplies:
http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/acatalo...er_Compact.html for T5 lights. This is the cheapest place I've seen them (if you're in the UK). I saved about £20 compared to what I would have paid at LFS. Postage is a bit on the expensive side though...

That is very cheap, a lot cheaper than Aquatics Online, the tubes alone are 33% cheaper (for my ones anyway) and the ballasts are the cheapest ive seen, good find Sam.

I'd love to take the credit, but it was mentioned in a post I just came across on here. I'm lucky I found it as this is where i just got my 24 watt bulb and ballast for the 5g. The delivery is on the slow side, you have to pick a day for it to be delivered and have to sign for it, but to save that amount of money it was worth it.

just need something cheap that will work for for a carpet probebly going with dwarf hair grass i live in canada but eh what kind of diference would it make?
