This is the tank that is getting done first.

It has already undergone massive changes. When I first found this site it had a really bright fake saltwater design. I have learned a lot, but still have a long way to go. I don't want to do this alone, and have to keep doing it over. So... please help me get it right. I love most of the tanks I see on here, but can't seem to get mine to look that good.
This is a 29usg tank. It has whisper 30/60 (for 60 gallon tank) filter. You can see that it has some plants, and wood in it now.
I am planning to change the substrate to be better for the plants. I am putting a light layer of pure laterite, then eco-complete, and tahitian moon sand in. I also have plant tabs. I need to know if I should put the sand or eco-complete on top, or if I should mix them.
I am also unsure how to place the wood. There is what is in it,and the new pictured below...
This was my attempt at stacking / putting it together... Not so good...

There is several apongeton plants in the tank, along with lily bulbs, water sprite, and java ferns. I have some wisteria on the way, and have more water sprite, and anacharis(I think), and amazon sword in other tanks that I could relocate.
I need some info and ideas. If it was yours what would you do?

i have a 29gal planted tank... i guess u could check out my first attempt to get some thoughts going

it can be found here in post #10

If you're just using the one piece of wood, position it so it's just off-centre; I find that anything that's positioned exactly central in a tank doesn't look quite right.

Hi! Nice tank. Does the bubbles not mess with the plants? Where do ya'll find the rocks? I like the raised sides. How do you keep them like that? I tried once. They flattened out on me.

That is 5 pieces put together. I will get separate pics so you can see what each one looks like. I will have to wait till everyone gets up though. I can't start making noise in the middle of the night.

I am going to move all of the fish to the 15g. I know it is way too many fish for that tank, but they will be ok for 1 or 2 days while I sort out and settle their tank.

Can I use the wood or the caves to hold up the substrate for some higher ground? I want to get the base right. It is the part that is hardest to change.

I know I will be changing some of the plants later. I need to get some more. I need to decide what will work and look good in my tank. I know I want some grassy ones. maybe corkscrew vals and crinum. I really like those. I also like the foxtails. I don't have enough light for them yet. I do hope to get more lighting soon.

What do you put between the glass and the background to get it to stick and not get bubbles or those scratch like marks. I heard vasaline works. Is that true? I am going to try to re do that too while I have it broken down.

Is it better to have the filter on one side or in the center?

I will add more pics and info in the morning. (and questions)

Thanks :good:

I forgot... My lighting is a single 20w fluorescent. I have another one that had incandescents that I replaced with the screw in fluorescents. That adds 36w extra.
I know I need better lights...

Hello,

In your originating post, you mention that you have seen some tanks that you like the look of.

Can you post some links up to those - it will give us a better impression of what you are attempting to achieve.

Andy

Try arranging the wood inside the tank when it is empty to see what looks best. Get this part right, don`t rush it, and the rest of the aquascape should fall in to place.

Dave.

One thing I can sugguest is take all that water wistera I sent you and plant it in the back, it tends to grow a lot and will need to be trimmed but it is very good at hiding filters, heaters, CO2 ladders etc. Also it has a bright lime green color and sets off the dark colors of the wood nicely. remember that you will need to plant based on what the tank WILL look like not what it looks like when you put the tank together.

And have fun

The plants didn't come today. I called and they were no help. They just said give it more time.(up to 14 days) How do they figure 14 days for something sent 2 day delivery? I guess I wait...
I am getting the other stuff ready.
More later...

I sent them 2 day pirority mail. I think they will show up today just put them in the tank when you get them even if you don't plant them as they will need a jump start after 3 days of mailing

here is a pic of the plants the day I sent them (I sent you ALL of this water wisteria)

Can pieces like this be saved?

Most of the pieces only have one joint. If I plant that joint will it grow or rot? There are about 3 pieces that have a few more, but there were no leaves attached(or unmelted) I removed the rotten stuff, and saved all I could. Now tell what to do with it.
Thanks

I have them floating in one of the tanks. I am going to give it a while to see what they do. I will put off the re-do for now. I am also going to look into getting some more plants to give it some more color and texture. The wisteria and water sprite look too much alike. I need to get some things that will go with them, but look different.
I need suggestions for things that will work in soft water with low to med light, root tabs, and liquid ferts. (seachem) I don't have co2. I may add it later, but for now I want to keep it kind of easy.
I would like something dark green and atleast one other color.
I need suggestions of plants that will go well with them. I am going to look around and see what I can find too.
Thanks for all the help...
