Ok so I bought a 55 gallon from a co worker... I filled my 55 gallon up with "city punch" (tap water) and used a product called "start right" to get my ph level balanced. I waited all night to check the ph level, and I have a reading of 7.6. I need it at 7.0 because I have community fish in a beta that im hoping to put in the 55 gallon some time today. Ive add'd PH Down, How long should I wait to test again...

Any thing which alters PH makes the water unstable. The majority of fish are able to survive in a slightly higher or lower PH to there comfort zone. If you are purchasing the fish locally then they will have the same PH and will be tollerant to it!

Also, have you cycled and used a declorinator when you added the tap water?

I have 2 pumps going... And my ph level finally went into effect im going to try adding fish now... will let you know of any problems.

PH adjusters are bad, and will cause more harm than good. You really should of let the 55gal sit for a while before adding the fish. If you have already added the fish and the tank is not cycled. Then you should take the filter media from the old tank and add it to the 55gal filter. Don't clean the filter pads or anything. This should skip the cycle.

i agree it's better to let your fish acclimate to the ph than to take the chance of a ph change to kill them. unstable ph is much more dangerous in my opinion.

PH level was 7.0 when I add'd my fish and they have been doing good... I have 2 pumps like air stones or what ever there callled.

 I would cycle your tank first. Fish will either die or suffer otherwise. There are a few methods of doing that. Since you are already getting your fish I would buy some Bio-spira. It is live bacteria. That your fish need in the water. You can get it at some pet stores. You pour the Bio-spira in first then instantly add your fish. Since your fish will be in the water you just add the bio-spira. That is the only product on the market that works. Don't let them sell you anything else. I paid 11.99 for 30 gallons I'm not sure for a 55 gallon. It's totally worth it. Good Luck!
