Had to move 3 jewel fry about 3cm to emergency tank after they started killing my other fish. New set up, no time to cycle but do daily water changes to keep ammonia levels low. Been there about a week and seemed OK. Just did 30% water change today and now they are all sitting on their tails at the bottom, heads slightly up. Used chlorine treatment and water temperature felt the same by hand.

You could have just taken some established filter media from your other tank to cycle the new tank. What are you water stats?

pH 7.6 normal for \london
Ammonia 0.25
Nitrite 1.0 higher than I expected
Should I do another water change now to reduce nitrite or wait till tomorrow morning?
Funny thing is they were OK till I did the the water change, which should have REDUCED NH3 and nitrite.
Are cichlids susceptible to becoming ill after big water changes? Two months ago I did a 50% water change on another tank with convicts when I got back from2 weeks holiday and female and all fry died the next day. Almost lost the father too. Strange, as again they were fine until I did the water change and had even hatched fry which were wimming around while I was away.

You should do a large as possible water change. Dont feed them anything. Put salt in the tank after you have done a water change, 2 tablespoons per 10 gallons- this protects the fish from nitrite poisoning. Table salt is ok to use

add the salt slowly one spoon at a time.

Big water changes shouldn't be a problem as long as the water is heated to somewhere near the temp of the tank and is declorinated.

Added 1.5 liter water to dilute nitrite. Finally got off their tails, saw 2 swimming in tank middle and one heading for the surface. Will do big water change tomorrow and add aquarium salt as suggested. Thanks -will keep an eye on thoise nitrite levels too
