Can anyone adviser me. It appears that one of my little platy fish has been caught between some small rocks and had injured itself. We have freed it but it looks troubled and in pain. What is best for the fish? Although it try and recover or put it out of its suffering?

I would give it a day or two; fish can be remarkably resilient. Make sure you keep the water in tip top condition though.

If you really think it's suffering, then clove oil is the kindest method.

Hope it pulls through.

Thank you. I've just done a water change so I'll hope for the best and keep an eye on him. What do you do with the clove oil? Some one said to me to put it in some water and in the freezer to end its little life. Would the Clove be the better option? Thanks again

The freezer wouldn't kill it quick enough the quickest method is a good thump to the head is the quickest way

Yes, that's true, but not of all of us a brave enough, and if you do it wrong....

The one and only advantage of the freezer method is it's 'out of sight, out of mind'.

Clove oil is painless (clove oil is a fish anaesthetic) and recommended by vets. You need some clove oil and a container that you don't want to use again (it does smell; I used an old margarine tub). Measure out a litre of tank water. Put most in with the fish, in your container. The rest of the water, put in a old jam jar and add 30 drops of clove oil. Mix it up into an emulsion by shaking it hard with the lid on ( it will go white and opaque) and then just slowly pour it in with the fish.

The only time I've had to do this, the fish stopped breathing and was unconscious within a few seconds and (I'm sure) was dead in a minute or two. You could always put it in the freezer after that, just to make sure.

Let's hope you don't have to do it, but it is a good thing to know about.

Awww thanks. He died through the night. Thanks for your advice though. Hope all the other fish are ok now. I'll take the water to be tested x
