Hi :)

Set my tank yesterday and while at the LFS i decided to pick up some cheap real plants unfortunately the lfs guy didnt explain anything about real plants like that I now know they need some kind of fertilizer but also how to even plant them or what.

Ended up pointing at 2 lots that where 10 for £1.25, 2 amazon swords and this pink lilly type plant (was going to keep a betta in but change of plan)

Anyways came home and plunked them in the tank and here I am not knowing what they are so could you kind folks help me out and guide me in my plant-noob ways

The plants get natural light during the day and from about 5pm till 11-12pm they get the tank light
Cheers

Oh and there's 2 plastic ones in as converted my old tank to a betta one

The plant with the broad lighter green leaves is the amazon sword and the bushy darker green plant is cabomba. Cabomba needs relatively good light. What lighting does your tank have (wattage) and how big is it?

1X15W Fluresent Tubes according to the spec

Could you suggest some that are low maintenance? the only one I actually like the look of are the Amazon swords so ive no qualms with replacing the others in about a week or so.

ah so 1WPG is essentially what its providing as its a 64 liter tank/ 15 gal

if it has decent fertilization, good flow and CO2, it will do well in low light, did you see supercoleys post the other day? all of his theories make sense

Yes 1WPG.
You could grow java fern, anubias, bolbitis, mosses, vallisneria, marsilea.
Amazon swords are fine with 1WPG but are root feeders so need a nutrient rich substrate. If the substrate isn't already a specialist plant one then you can add root tabs to the gravel to feed the roots.

i suggest you add a CO2 supplement and ferilizers, im guessing your new to plants like me? so i would go down the:

easy lifes easy carbo (CO2 supplement)

and

Tropica plant nutrition +

to start with, seeing as you have low light, and your plants will take off with these two elements

Yes this will help the plants as will the root tabs for the amzon swords.

Owchy was not expecting them to need all sort of specialist stuff because im ignorant like that ;p) oh dear..
onet hing but will these be ok for about 4 days possibly more without this stuff?

yeah theyll be fine without it for a few weeks, but its not needed with low maintenance plants. but id go for it to keep the algae away

They'll be ok without it.

If you don't want to go into all the specialist stuff you could just leave the tank as it is, you would just have slower growth. C02 supplements and ferts aren't essential, they just promote faster growth. If you do decide to leave the tank i would remove all the plants you have in now, and add some low light tolerant ones like java ferns and mosses. These will do fine without c02 or fertilizers and look good too.

Awesome thanks :) so for Amazons I need iron tabs is it? do they just fit on the bottom of the roots and thats it or is it added to the water or something?

Any ideas about the lilly bulb thing? odd how it has its own dark bulb that the guy told me sits on top of the substrate.

Thanks again for all the help

Root tabs are buried near the plants roots in the substrate and they need replenishly around once every two months.
Not sure about the liy bulb thing. But i can see it's roots in the water so it might be an idea to plant them in the gravel.
