my girlfriends have recently bought me a male as a house warming gift with a tank which holds around maybe four litres. Really small and he lived in it for about a month buy about a week ago i set up a 30ltr castle for him and moved him into the kitcken where he gets much more sunlight. anyhow he seems to really really love his new home which is great only just recently he has developed a perculiar quirk. whenever someone walks past his tank or moves around the kitchen he swims upto the front and flairs up his side gills and another little flap under his chin. at the start i thought it was cute but now im starting to thing his a bit of a ***** cos you can fully see his little eyes follow you around and even when i tap on the galss that doesnt seem to scare him off.

basically i just wondering if my Rover has somesort of chemical inbalance as in too much tostosterone and if all this flairing up is no good for him.

I dont know whats wrong with him, but I wouldnt be to worried, its not like his going to jump out and attack you! :shout:

Sounds to me like he really, really likes his new quarters and wants to make sure no one intrudes. My betta George always flares when I walk up to his tank. It hasn't hurt him at all--he's the most active, healthiest betta I've ever had.

you should not tap on the glass. It creates shock waves which hurt him,.

-nods head- one of my bettas flares up anytime you walk past his tank, but begs as soon as you pick up the food container :hyper: . it's just their personality.

This is just typical betta behavior ;) They flare/display....I do recall seeing a picture of someone's betta flaring at a pepsi/soda can

But thats why we love the little buggers so much...all of there odd lil quirks!
