i have 7 week old guppy fry and some r starting to get their gravid spots.some have red,orange,red-orange,pinkish. i think i can seperate them now cause i know the gravid ones r female and the smaller ones r male... am i right?? i need to know cause i dont want a fry that small getting pregannt and dieing :(

You can separate your fry to prevent further breeding and crowding in your tank. It is actually not a bad idea unless you have lots of room. I have not seen common livebearers harmed by carrying fry at a small size, they just have a lot less fry until they get bigger. Carrying fry does seem to slow the growth of the females though.

110% agree.

Just be aware though that guppies gravids spots come at early age but does not mean that they are pregnant, i had a tank full of female virgins (from 4-20 weeks old)i was using for a project, and all the females had very dark gravid spots.

i know that just cause guppies have gravid spots doesnt mean they r pregnant but i just dont want it to happen.the 5 gal is all i have right now(well to use for guppies)and my adults still nip at the biggest frys so idk what to do.

ok i said before in my other thread that i have a fry who is bigger than any of the other ones and i just spotted it today and i has a fully colored tail!! and its gravid spot is wayyy more visible than the other baby females.i wonder what this one has been eaten or doing cause it bigger than the other one and its the first time ive spotted it in about 4 days.it likes to hide and come out sometimes.

uhhh oohhh this one fry is getting a pointed thing under it!!!! i hope its not the gonopodium!! i dont want pregnant fry!! i cant seperate them unless they grow just a little bit more so i can put the males on one side and females on the other. my females have clear gravid spots now!

Watch out. . .I had a male with a gravid spot. At first I thought it was a female and then it's gonopodium formed. . .it still had the gravid that would come and go throughout the day!

ETA - you have all those guppies in a 5-gallon? How is the ammonia levels. Just a bit of experience, I have a 5-gallon that was once overstocked with guppies and ALL the new fry died because the ammonia levels couldn't be controlled. Chances are you'll have a difficult time keeping any additional fry alive in such a small tank.

well they are only gonna be in there until they r big enough to sell and not get eaten by angelfish.the ammonia levels r fine its at 0 and nitrates too so im all good.but one of my adult females has a growth on it!! its like pinkish and its above the eye

What kind of growth? She should be seperated from the other fish if she appears sick.
