Hi

My young juvenile GSP jumped as I was feeding him and cut himself on the sharp edge of the slides glass top.

He has a 2-3mm cut just behind his gill. He is swimming around normally but clamping his fin over the cut, occasionally he will move the fin normally so that isn't damaged. The cut is pink.

What can I do to help preven invection without too much stress.

He is in a 130l 4ft tank, still freshwater, with another juvenile GSP. The 2 get along very well (at the moment).

Water parameters are fine, ammonia and nitrite at 0 and nitrate between 10-20.

I did a 10% water change yesterday, but presuming 10% water changes daily will now help and hoovering up waste.

Would a salt bath help and if so how do I do that? (I have marine salt here ready to change to Brackish).

Thanks

Fiona

Salt helps clean the wounds and stop infection.
Also you can use mealfix but sometimes best to half dose.
Or a dip in methylene blue, or dab the wound with methylene blue.

What the name of the fish as don't always know the abbreviations.

Ok. Thanks.

Ok. Thanks.
wilder, can i ask you a question, if a fish is kept in brackish water, then, would that automatically help to stop infections, or would then the thing you would need to do is lower the salinity (saltyness) of the water by adding freshwater so as the bacteria/fugi??? cant adapt as quick?

The salt should help but if the wound comes infected the salt might not help if the bacteria multiplys fast.

I think I would dab the wound in melafix or methylene blue.

Maybe use half dose of melafix in the tank.
But make sure all the fish can tolerate melafix.

Andy never kept a brackish tank, or learnt about brackish tanks so abit out of my depth answering your questions.
So tryed to answer as best as I can.

Thanks guys

Yes, sorry, Green Spotted Puffer. My first and they don't have scales and have read that this kind of damage can cause problems, so I am really keen to give him the right help to heal. He has been doing so well. Also need to sort out the sharp edges on the slidog top so it doesn't happen again. Though he is clever and don't think he will be trying it again too soon.

Thanks for your advice. Could you tell me how to give a salt bath?

You could try to find some sort of rubber seal that would fit around the glass were theres two edges and the glass fits down the middle. I'm trying to think of an example of somthing that has one but can't think of one right now if I do I'll let you know.

5mm rubber tubing slit it all the way along one side the push it over the lip on the glass maybe using some aquatic safe sealant to hold it in place
