 Hi all,

I've been keeping fish for over 25 years, and yes I need help.

Having always loved bettas, last year I got a male VT "The Red Baron" (only the 3rd time i've named a fish). Now I can honestly say
I can Id male types.
Females on the other hand now a days to me are difficult because of there colour (20 years ago they where a drab color and easy to Id),
even when young.

So yasterday I thought, now i'm back working i'll try my hand at breeding bettas. While at the LFS I seen this betta in with males, now im probly wrong but, this one was acting different.

Here's 3 pics, 2 from yesterday, and one from today.
The fins (caudal) looks CT on the 1st pic.

Many thanks in advance.

it might possibly be a female, but it looks like a Halfmoon plakat male to me. Not 100% sure, someone else might be able to help! :)

To me it really looks like a male but i cant be sure but i think its a male. Ah im so confusedd now i think its a girl, leave someone else to decide lol!

she looks like a female :)
hasn't got the fin extension of a male and has stress lines in first pic

It's a youngster that's for sure! :hyper: could be a female but I'm going to say young male veiltail at this stage, pretty sure it's a veiltail type and not a crowntail, let us know how he/she progresses :good:

I would say possibly female plakat - definately not a CT - not enough ct finnage - could be a HM line female - but would need to know how many ray extensions she has

give her time to settle in (2 weeks) and then add a male in to the tank - keeping female in chimney and out of the way - after a few days she should get breeding stripes and start to egg up if she is a girl if not she is a he and a young PK

wouldn't say its a young male VT - wrong tail

here's a 7 week old vt

and most fish in lfs are at least 3-4 months old

here's a 5 month old female VT

Thats whats I was thinking and, if you look closer at the pelvic fins in the last pic, you can just see a bit white
just behind them.

As to the type i'm still not sure, because the dorsal fin looks to me like a VT. I've browsed through 100's of pic
of plakat's and they seem to be longer down the body and rounder.

It maybe that she's a cross between two VT and something else, i'll just have to watch her grow and maybe
she'll answer the question later.

I’m 99% sure it’s a female, because my male keeps coming up to her and showing off. He has never built a bubble nest before, so he’d better start bucking his ideas up I can vaguely see horizontal stripes on her, I’ll try and get a pic's as soon as I can.

Pretty sure it's female. I can see an ovispot in front of the anal fin, and males don't tend to show stress stripes as readily as females
