Hi

Ive been fishless cycling for a couple of days using bactinettes, at first there was a lot of dust in the water of my tank, that has now gone taken up by the filter i imagine only now when i look in the tank from below i can see lots of stuff on the surface of the water loads litle bits covering the whole surface. It is see through and looks like some kind of oil floating on the surface, what is it and how can i get rid of it???

The stuff you see on top of your water is normal, you just need to agitate the water surface. A good way to do that is by adding an air pump. Are you adding an ammonia source to your tank for your cycling process?

I would suspect the 'oily' film is from your hands. Could it be soap or hand cream? You should rinse your hands and arms thoroughly under running water using NO soaps at all before putting them in the tank.

It may disperse after time but blotting paper will suck it up if it's really bad.

Quicker to use ammonia to do a fishless cycle......Read THIS

I have the same stuff in my cycling tank (but I'm using ammonia). I don't stick my hands in the tank, so it's probably from lack of aeration. Do I need to get an air pump? I really don't care if the stuff is there, it's not that noticeable. But will the air pump help the cycle or future fish?

sorry i was a bit misleading

i am fishless cycling using ammonia, only using bactinettes as a bacteria additive
