When you say buy more carbon, are you running carbon in the filter currently? Because its job is to remove things like meds, so you need to take it out while you treat. And what's an ammonia filter? Was the tank cycled before you added fish? By that I mean did you add liquid ammonia to an empty tank, checking the readings for 6-8 weeks, until it could process 5ppm in 12 hours?
