Wilder

Hope you are well. I have added some Whitespot treatment today. I was also advised to add salt. Is it safe to do so at the same time. Also the instructions state that it does not evaporate and is not filtered out so what happens to it. Your advice is greatley appreciated.

ps will it harm my shrimp? The instuctions state that it is only harmnful to Mormyrids

I wouldn't add salt with having the clown loaches.
Not sure about shrimp and salt as I have never kept them. Whitespot meds can kill them so they really need to be moved.

i keep guppies and if the females are really being harassed by the males (ie males pecking incessantly at the girls) it can lead to stress and patches of "peeling skin"...almost like a callus on the fish from the pecking. it also looks like the slime coat is overproducing in those areas when the males wont stop bothering the females (which is all the time!). how many females to males do you have? increasing the numbers of females to 3:1 might help to reduce the harassment and the subsequently the white patches from nipping.
just a thought as you said the affected guppies are acting otherwise fine. some of my females go thru phases of "patches" and then it clears up after they mate...so watch the males and see if they are really harassing that female (esp if they are close to dropping fry as the boys want to mate and are absolutely relentless. the less females to males makes it that much worse)
cheers and best of luck.

Thanks for that. I had a ratio of 2:1. It has gone down since they have been dying. Another 2 produced the symptoms this morning. Now you mention it I do recall that the males do seem to be swimming very close at times (sometimes it looks aggressive) next to the females. I do remember particulary an Orange female that had a male constantly at her side and within a few days she developed symptoms and was dead the next morning. Would what you are suggesting cause them to die though?

if the males are harassing the females it is really obvious. they peck and peck and peck incessantly. not just swim with them. the males could be stressing the females which lowers the immune system and made them prone to infection. id treat the tank as per suggestion of Wilder and see if it helps. try to increase the number of females in the tank once this is all cleared up. some females can die when they are fry bound...just one of those thigns that happens sometimes. males can also harass each OTHER to mate if there arent enough females around (they are horny little things  ) just some things to look out for and be aware of with guppies.
best of luck in treatment!

I think it is more just swimming with them than constantly pecking. The 2 that are poorly were sitting on the bottom of the tank but when I put food in they swam for it. They either sit on the sand or hide under top floating plants that I have. I am currently treating for whitespot but will look to get the solutions suggested by Wilder and use when I can. What a life, 3 females to 1 male. Suggested this to the wife and I am sure I will be waking up with a bad back tomorrow from sleeping on the sofa and not sure what I am going to cook for myself tonight. No pizza in the fridge, oh well beans on toast.

thanks
