I woke up to find my halfmoon Bastien, losing his dorsal fin. I did a 50% water change and cut out a plastic plant that could have been causing the problem. An hour ago I checked on him again and its only gotten worst.

I just went out to the pet store and bought some Maracyn and a gallon plastic bowl. The woman at the pet store said it was better to just let the medicine work inside his tank cause it needs the filtration instead of putting him in a bowl.

I thought about putting him in his own one gallon bowl for a little while so i could clean out his tank better because even though I used my vacuum cleaner there was stuff still floating in his water.

The medicine is in powder form and requires two packets per 10 gallon. I have a 5 gallon tank so the math is easy enough for my tank but not for the one gallon bowl. What should I do leave him in his tank and let the medicine work or put him in the bowl and clean.

On top of that I'm also not sure on when I should replace his filter pad or when or how to clean it. So that could be another issue.

I've been been doing constant one gallon changes lately because of a high ammonia found do to it being in my tap water. I have been using spring water which has a really bad ph and alkalinity for him. So after calling around I got some better water from petco... but it would be to much of a drastic change to just administer it and I also dont know how good that would be if i want the medicine to work well.

What have you treated your water with to get rid of the ammonia? I'm assuming if you have been doing 1 gal water changes lately and there is ammonia in your tap water then that may be the cause of fin rot. You could be blowing your money on buying water and resorting to antibiotics for treatment when all you need to do is get rid of the ammonia in your tap water. I would go out and buy a bottle of Prime made by Seachem. This product is excellent in getting rid of chlorine, ammonia and nitrates in your water and you only need a few drops.
My opinion, I would put your fish in the spare bowl while you do a good thorough clean of your tank, gravel and filter, replace the cartridges but not the sponge as that holds your good bacteria. My filter requires me to change the pads every 2-3 weeks but I found that very costly so I found another way to skin that cat. When you finished with a thorough clean and primed the water raise the temp to 26-27c being careful to introduce your fish back slowly. With a clean pristine environment his fins should start to heal. If after a day or so his fins are still deteriorating check to make sure there is no ammonia present hopefully there won't be. Then I would start with the medication and the less harsh one I would recommend would be Melafix. Maybe someone else on the forum may have a better solution. Best of luck and please keep us posted. :good:
