hi all...

had massive hospitalization of fish today from my trigon 350...i have been watching them for a couple of weeks and reading articals on here re parasites...and how to sort them tem and salt etc etc..any how..

started off by loosing a guppy..then a couple of mollys...noticed my shrimp munching them...they looked kinda lazy..did a bit of flicking and then passed away.had white stringy poo..visable loss of weight...then a cory..couple more mollys,endler...this was with dose of salt and heat rise..

any how this am i lost my fave stick catfish...and another guppy..and notices red kinda worm end protruding from their bums...frantic inet search and these look like the dredded camalanus worms..

so ive taken these steps.......taken all fish out and placed in a hospital tank..placed shrimp an another hospital tank (i dont want fish treatment to kill shrimps)...taken all slate out and will be cleaning down and bleaching...all plastic plants out with view to doing same..and also substrate ..and thorought clean of tank..and filter and media...all to prevent re contamination once fish/shrimp have the all clear...

what i need is info on the best way to treat these fish/shrimp...(if they are effected by the c worms)...

any help given would be brilliant...
if suggestions could be given for over the counter treatment that works...as i can only see via inte that fenbendazole will work!!!

Levimasole. By FAR the best treatment IMO. It is safe for inverts so you can worn the whole tank, which you should be doing anyways.

I'm not sure where you get it in the UK so you'll have to ask around. In the US you can get it at the vets and in Canada it is restricted but mercifully some hobbyists/importers sell it under the table.

Simply vacuum the gravel, add the levimasole, keep the lights off for 4 days (the meds are light-sensitive). Then do another thorough gravel vac and repeat treatment in 2 weeks.

As far as I know this is the only treatment for callamamus worms so fingers crossed you can get your hands on some!

cheers for the reply...im looking into getting some sent via usa lol...

do u know if shrimp and or snails mts are effected by these worms atall??

Nnnope! I have it in my tanks right now and physa snails, cherry shrimp and nerite snails are all peachy. A very good med to have on hand, espescially since its not like quarantining a fish will help at all with internal parasites. Unless you are treating EVERYTHING, even the gravel they will always be there!

hi kelly..

cheers for the reply....in answer to your question...yes im treating every thing...well kinda....ive taken all the fish out and put in a hospital tank...same with mts and shrimp...drained all water and cleaned tank thermo..ext filter and all media..(il take media out of other filter to kick start the cycle) rocks and slate and tank have been cleaned with milton tablets and rinsed several times...and gravel is being replaced with sand...lol...a major clean..once these fish have been treated..they will stay in hosp tank for 3 weeks (so tank can cycle) and i will treat the water in that also once i have intorduced the fish...just incase...lol..i was thinking of a change around inside..but it was eventually forced on me by the worms lol...so may aswell sort it all out in one go...

Have you already put the sand in? If not your best shot is to remove the gravel for the treatment, then put it back in afterwards. The parasites like to hide in the substrate so a bare-bottomed tank is their worst nightmare lol.

hi kelly

no the sand isnt in yet...the tank is completely bare....i was gunna treat gravel to a good dose of milton tablets and a thorough rinse out over a few days...all the fish are in just a bare tank.....u think that the gravel will be better then the sand?..or u mean treat it bare then add gravel /sand?...

Hi All

I think I got Camalanus in my tank, it has killed at least 3 fishies all are rummies, the rest of the fishes are pretty new to the tank so may not shown the symptomps yet.

It all started a month ago, I noticed a fish with injured bottomside (anus abdomen area) I didn't actually know what that is untill it died, almost immediately afer the 1st died a 2nd fish showing the same symptomps after a few weeks it died as well and again another fish is showing the symptomps, this time I took it out and euthanise it using cold water.

Afterwards I took a close up picture (will post later) and the anus/abdomen area were injured with some red thread like thing sticking out (it did not show when the fish was still alive though) I did research and came to a conclusion that it was Camalanus. I have ordered some Levamisole from a bird supplies seller.

The rest of the fishies looks ok but some of the other rummies looks a bit bloated. I also have some casualties amongst my Red Cherry shrimps but probably due for other reasons not too sure but probably because of the worms as well, does it affects shrimps as well?

Can anyone advise me whether my diagnosis were correct? and what dosage of Levamisole should I use? The information on the bottle says: Active constituent 12g/L Levamisole Hydrochloride equivalent to 10.5g/L Levamisole.

Thank you

There this med in the uk for camallanous worms.
Levaimsole. You need a vet to perscribe the med in the uk.

Got the medicine already, bought from E-Bay, it is a de-wormer for birds.

I am not too sure on the dosing, the information from the internet is very vague and in-consistent and mostly relates to levamisole powder and not liquid levamisole.

The following is the information I have from the bottle
Active constituent 12g/L Levamisole Hydrochloride equivalent to 10.5g/L Levamisole, it is a 125ml bottle.

Thanks

I have a link some where for dosing levaimsole powder.
