ok, i have a large 4ft freshwater community aquarium, i have a pretty standard setup really nothing ou tof the ordinary as such, 3 angels 3 silver silver sharks some corys and clown loaches and some danios and silver tip tetras. i have a 250lt aquarium with a external Tetratec filter suitable for upto 500lt filtration and a internal UV light filter, so water quality is not a problem, i have various testing kits all the water paramters are normal, ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 20-30 temperature of the tank is at 26-27 degrees i've had this setup for well over a year now and so far have had zero problems, how ever recently i noticed my big black angel acting very strange and swimming right up in front of the outlet for the external filter no matter what i tried i couldn't get it to come away from there he wasn't feeeding either. after a couple of days i decided to remove him and put him in my quarentine tank. now he just lies flat on his side on the bottom of the tank, at first i expected it to die within a few hours but it's been this way for almost a week now and doesn't seem to be either improving or deteriorating, he;s not eating and only swims round when motivated i.e trying to touch him puttting a net in the tank etc, he has no interest in food and just sits there looking extremely miserable. i have been treating him with interpets no 9 anti internal bacteria as there don't appear to be any visible symptoms of what could be causing this, my other 2 angels are fine as is the rest of my tank.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated if yu require any more information please lket me know i really would lik to save him as it's roughly about 6" tall now fin tip to fin tip and i've had this particular angel since he was the size roughly of a thumb nail and have really enjoyed watching him grow into the magnificent specimen he's become

have the other two paired off if so it could be that he as been picked on
if there is three angels in a tank and the other two pair off thet will kill
the other on its to do with pecking order

biff

no as ar as i can see the other 2 are not behaving any differently to what they ever have they both just swim roundthe tank as normal, sometime together sometimes apart just as they always have

Laying on the bottom of the tank to one side not good, that can mean bacterial to parasite.
Is the fish bloated or thin looking.
What does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.

yes he does look fairly thin, although tht may be due to the fact it's not eaten for quite some time now, over a week, i can't really say what the waste looks like as i've not seen any for a long time, as he's not been eating

Bless him being thin can be internal parasites.
If you havent seen him go to the toilet for a while it can be organ failure.
How are the other fish any signs of long stringy white poo.
He dosn't sound good.

actually thinking back i have just thought i thinki i do remember seeing him with white feces a short time before coming ill, any ideas what that is could that be the cause of this problem and if so how can i resolve it

Contipation, internal parasites, to bacterial infection, white feces.

None in the uk now they have taken flubenol off the market.

: (FLAGYL) Treatment of hole in the head disease (
hexamita ) salt water ich or bloat. 250 ml per 20 gallons of water, and can be mixed in foods.

ahh yes i do belive my local garden/aquatics centre sells that i shall go asap and get some

Good.
Good luck hope he pulls through.
Metronidazole: (FLAGYL) you need the med in powder form, not the med in the bottles at the lfs as they don't do much.

250mg/20 gallons of water isn't going to do much. I treat with 40mg/gallon metro, with some sprinkled on the food. I've treated a couple dozen angels successfully using this method;

Put the angel in a quar tank, I usually use a 10 gallon. Increase the temp over a day or so to 90-94F. Treat daily with 40 mg/gallon metronidazole, with 50% water changes daily. If the fish isn't eating, don't feed for the first 3 days. After 3 days, get some frozen brine shrimp. Take a portion about the size of a few match heads, and sprinkle on some metro. You have to eyeball this one, make the shrimp look kind of like a tiny powdered donut. Once it thaws, mix it in & feed. Sometimes they still don't eat for a few days, but once they start to mouth the food & spit it out, the meds seem to get in their system real good. Continue medicating the water & food for 7-10 days.

Metronidazole is sold as flagyl, het-a-mit, and a few other names I can't recall offhand, used to treat hexamita & hole in the head. They usually suggest 20mg/gallon, this often isn't enough. Metro deteriorates in 8 hours, so you could do twice daily water changes. I've done this on the weekends when I have time.

Don't let the high temp scare you, angels can handle higher than that. I've had them as high as 98 due to a broken heater. Just make sure to have only angels in the tank at that temp. Make sure to have plenty of aeration also, as warmer water holds less O2.

I've also added epsom salt while using metro, this helps with any constipation issues, cleans out the digestive tract. I start with 1 teaspoon per 10 gallons of water, increasing by 1 teaspoon daily for 2 more days to bring it up to 3 teaspoons per 10 gallons. You will have to adjust how much you use when doing water changes. You may want to give this a try.
