i was on the A19 near middlesborough thgis morning when i received a call from my son saying the following............'his water has gone cloudy overnight, and one of his clown loaches has died with what appeared to be cotton wool/spiders web kinda material over/on its mouth. so he has transferred his 2 remaining clowns, 2 hoplo cats, and 2 sailfin plecs into my tank ' 'thanks son :good:' was part of my reply.

so i now have an overstocked tank, with possibly ill/diseased fish in it. yesterday i did a water change in my tank, around 20%. i got a bit giddy. when i arrived home, not too long ago, i did another water change in my overstocked tank of around 30%. my sons tank is still very cloudy with no water change as yet, he went to work.

could someone please advize on best steps forward. i have no level readings as we do not have a test kit. i was about to go and do a 50% change for him but have decided to wait for feedback off here.

thank you,
mick.

How many gallons or litres is his tank.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats would be good but you don't have them.

How long has your sons tank been set up?

Water changes and increase aeration.
Take a sample of both tank water to the lfs to be tested, ask them to write the reading down for you.

The tanks severely overstocked.

Not one fish should be kept in that tank size.

I would phone the lfs to see if the would take all the fish back.

Research the fish before you buy, for tank size, compatability, adult size.

these fish are what the LFS have suggested to him. the hoplo's are now in my tank , and they are a little 'boisterous' arnt they
my tank now has what look like small cotton wool balls floating around in it, as well as lots of little particles. until he introduced his fish this morning it was perfect. what are these little balls of furry snot?

Could it be cotton mouth disease? It's very highly contagious bacterial infection, and is often associated with poor water quality, overcrowding, or inadequate diets. Adding aquarium salt can help some, and make it easier for the fish to breathe. High water temperatures can accelerate the progression of the disease, while lower temperatures will have no effect on the disease outcome. Good water is of utmost importance, so frequent water changes may be needed, especially if the parameters are less than ideal. Antibiotics are often recommended to help treat the bacterial infections. It's not uncommon for fungus to set in to the affected areas of the skin as well, so if that happens, you *may* need to later treat with an anti fungal medication. You will need to disinfect any nets used as well, as it can easily be spread from one tank to another using any media used in an infected tank.

Good luck

thanks for the input guys :good:

mt ytank has recovered, no balls of furry snot, and very few particles. my sons fish seem to ok at the moment also. his tank however  cotton mouth disease seems the most likely, and tomorrow i will start the water changes in his tank and deal with mine as i see fit when i view mine again tomorrow.

keep you updated.

Just remove the balls.
Plenty of water changes.
Make sure there no cotton wool on the fish.

Lfs don't always give the best advice out. There some good lfs, and bad.

I would rehome the clown loaches or it will all end it tears.
