Hi i am a newbie to the site and could really do with someones advice. I have 7 mollie fry which are 2 days old, they are at the moment still in the large tank in a small breeder they have plenty of room but i would like to put them into a small tank of their own until they are big enough to go in with the adults.
I have 2 other mollies that also look like they are ready to drop so will need the breeder tank for when they come!

If i was to move them would it stress and kill them? only having 7 i don't want to really be losing any! I have set up another tank and filled it will water out of the large tank. But before i do it i would like some advice please and some do's and dont's :)

Thanks

I don't like moving young fry myself.. but if it has to be done, it can be done. Do use only water from where they are now to fill the new tank, if you can, and make the move swift.

As for breeding traps, they're usually too small for the females and can actually make them too stressed to drop the fry properly. If you can, it is worth investing in a small "birthing" tank with a bottom of Java moss.

i had the same problem about 1 month ago when my 2 mollies and swordtail all dropped with in 1 week.
I set a new tank up and put them in there whether this was the wrong or right thing to do.
I originally had them in 3 floating breeders in my main tank until I set my smaller tank up.
I used the water from my main tank, plus about 5% fresh (treated), put a live plant in, a sponge filter and gravel. After a week of trying to clean it I had to remove the gravel as I found it hard to maintain, so left the base of the tank clear and cleaned it everyday with silicone tubing.
I still clean it every day now and replace the water with fresh and also test very regulary.

I have not lost any of my fry and they are all nearly 2 month now.

Thank you both for your advice :shifty: I really could do to move them with the other fish ready to drop soon too! I have put the same water in the little tank and put some stress coat in aswell and left it running for over 24hours now, I think i will have a go tonight just hope i don't do something i will regret :(

Will let you know how they get on
Thanks again

Thanks i will have a go tonight, I have put gravel in the bottom of the small tank, i am worried about the filter though i don't want them getting sucked in as they are only tiny

Hi I have got this other tank set up and now i don't know what to do for the best! Should i leave the fry where they are for the time being whilst they are doing fine and put the other 2 pregnant ones in the tank! It's not as easy as i thought this ha ha.... not that i was trying to breed them.

If you're not trying to breed, why are you moving them at all? It is usually less stressful to just leave them in the same tank..

Because although i wasn't expecting them to get pregnant i can't see them eat them now! When i purchased the fish i thought they were all females. And now i would like to see them reproduce. This is 1st time i have experienced anything like this :)

Just to let you know how i got on with the fry. We put them in the separate tank last night and they seem fine they have lasted the night anyway.
Fingers crossed they will be ok

good news :)

make sure you check your water regulary as I found my paraments would rise easily, which is why i do water changes daily

good luck

Yes i will keep a check on them, well that's the hubby's job... they are quite active and looking like they are liking their new home

Thanks

Welcome to our forum Mollys.
I find that we all do massive water changes on fry tanks to keep the water healthy for the fry. The end result is that the fry see almost the same change in water parameters daily as they see in the original move from tank to tank. As long as you are doing regular very large water changes on the fry tank and are feeding the fry frequently and generously, your fry should not only survive but thrive.
