advice urgently required - at the start of the week we done a water change 30% and once water was removed from the tank we realised we only had a drop of tap water conditioner remaining so we put in what we had in- which was no where near the required amount - now i have lost 5 fish within a day - whats happening !!!! havent yet got ph kit- never hd any problems in the 6months of having tank.
thanks

the chlorine could have kiled off large amounts of your bacteria causing a spike. have you tested for ammonia and nitrite?

dead fish : weahterloach, danio, catfish, pink tetra and a molly
current fish : 1 pink tetra, 2 congo tetra, 1 saphire molly, mono, swordtail, danio, plec and shrimp
thanks

Water change immediatley with dechlorinated water as big as possible, your cycle will be starting again more than likely.

how large is the tank? how long had the filter been set up?

your best bet is probably to go out and buy a big bottle of dechlorinator and start doing lots of waterchanges - - this will help keep down any spikes that resulted from chlorine getting into the filter system and killing your bacteria colony

TBH, I dont think you researched the fish you have, for example, the tetras, danio and catfish (assuming its a Corydora) should be in a shoal of 4 or more, Mollies need slightly salted water, Monos need salted water and a large tank, the plec ( assuming its a common pleco) will grow huge, weather loaches need cold water......
I think you should return the remaining fish especially the Mono, and get your tank problems sorted out, then add a suitable and compatible selection of fishes. :)
Some more info on the tank would be useful :)

I'll say this with a huge dose of YMMV.

I know people that never use tap water conditioner. In fact I've been advised by fishkeepers far more experienced than myself that the small levels of chlorine can actually kill any bad bacteria present in the tank. I've certainly done 50% water changes occasionally without conditioner without negative reactions.

Check with your local water company in case there's a particular day of the week that they add chlorine to the main supply. You may have just got incredibly unlucky with a particularly high dose of something.

I dont believe this has much to do with the stocking, and you do not know how big the tank is. Your working mainly from assumptions. Mollies are fine in unsalted water, as well as full marine if they are acclimatised correctly.

As for the problem I would say you have been unlucky, and you need to keep doing water changes until your stats level out, Many people do a 20% waterchange with no dechlorinator with no problems but above that they do. Most important thing to do is water changes now and large ones with dechlorinator!

What size tank is out out of interest and how long has it een running?

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

If you don't have test kits, take a sample of your water to the lfs and ask them to write the readings down for you.

You can do small water changes without declorinator, but not large water changes.

Are any fish showing symtoms like laboured breathing, gasping, flicking and rubbing, excess mucas, darting, turning upside down, grey or white coating on fish.

Could any chemicals gotten into the tank during the water change.
