i have a 2 females and they have suddenly started attacking the male. they have ripped off most of his fins and i dont know what to do.

Any suggestions???

get him out of there, he shouldn't be living with females unless he is mating and then only one.

i have taken him out but dont relly have another sutiable fish tank to keep him in just an un heated un filtered bowl.

I have ben told so much conflicting information - i was told that a male should be keep with a minimum of 2-3 females!! and hat was from a so called expert store here in england.

I would like to keep the male so i think i may ask the store if i can take the females back.

go tell your fishstore to jump off a cliff :grr:

no male betta should be kept with feamles unless they are breeding, and even if they are breeding it should only be one to one.

You could keep him in the fish bowl, anything is better than leaving him in witht eh females. I would suggest you get him at least 1g tank soon though.

Sometimes I don't know how the employees get their jobs at fish stores
You should keep all of them tho.

What she said cc's smart! she knows how to do calculus   ;)

I have bettas in 1 gal bowls and they do great! Just keep up on your water changes and keep the bowl in a place where the heat won't fluctuate too much

edit~ I would also add some aquarium salt to his water to help with his torn fins

Geez, I don't know where these fish shop people get their information! At no point in the keeping of Bettas, has it ever been ok to keep a male with any amount of females, so where do they come up with this? Why are people who deal with animals and fish not required to be trained and knowledgable about them? It's not that hard, come on, sit at the internet and surf a bit. Idiots.

Local fish store employees are known to have a disease known as "retardedism"

Get him in a bowl where he can swim around comfortably. If it's temporary it can be less then a gallon, but a gallon would make him most happy. Females can be together, but you still have to watch them. Males together, no, and males and females, most definetly not.

If it's an unfiltered bowl it's perfectly fine, just do water changes on it every 2-3 days.

I have a male and 3 females in together and they seem pretty fine. sometimes sulla has a little nip at him apart from that though they seem pretty content.

the fish store i bought them from really a top class store - check out site:

http://www.viscum.co.uk/

i believe they are one of the top Discus breeders in europe - so should know what they are doing.

Being a novice i just took the advise they gave me!!!!

I wish i had done y wn research first!!!!

Thanks for everyones suggestions

You never did say if the fish was a Betta or a Gourami. If it was a Gourami, then normally keeping females with the male would be preferred. Bettas are a different story.
