Hello, I'm NeonSagaris and I hale from Great Britain.

I love looking after fish and I currently have one tank, a freshwater tank of course, with 2 Black Mollies, 4 Platies (2 Red Platies, 1 Mickey Mouse Platy and 1 Topsail Platy) and 2 Otto Catfish. They all live very happily in a 19 liter (5 gallon) Fluval Chi tank. I am planning on purchasing another tank that is a 38 liter (10 gallon) tank, and I hope to house some beautiful Neon Tetras in it. Neons have always been my favourite breed of fish, and soon I hope to own some. I was thinking maybe a group of 6-8 of them in a tank, and maybe another breed of fish to go with them.

Help with knowing how many Neons to get and what else to put with them would be very much appreciated, and I am looking forward to being a part of this community!

I'd go bigger than a 38 litre if you want neons. Maybe a 60? 70 litre. Neons need alittle more room than other fish, Plus I think your already quite overstocked in the tiny 19 litre tank.

For your ottoa cats maybe a 20 gallon plus some neons and such.

The fish in the tank I already have seem very happy and active and I think they've all pretty much reached maximum size, but I did wonder if I had a tad too many.

For the new tank, I don't think I'll be able to afford a good tank that is that big, you see. I have wanted Neons all my life, are you sure it's not ok to have maybe a group of 6 or 7 in a 38 liter tank?

In a 19 litre tank you'd be lucky to have a betta and a few shrimp at the most. A 38litre tank for neons I have no idea, I have a 200litre tank with 7 neons on it and they use the entire size of the tank :p

Wow! How much space do they need?! They're such small lil' critters. I was hoping to have some Neon's and a few Endler's or Harlequin's... Are the Neon's so active that they need a lot of space to zoom around in or something like that?

I wouldn't say there quick but they do use up as much space as there is, I have corys and a pleco too in my tank but am nowhere near overstocked. Was planning on around 10-15 neons myself :p

That many Neon's would make staring at the tank for hours totally worth it! You probably should get more. I just hope I can get some for the largest tank I can afford.

Also, if I were to get a group of 6 or 7, would I be able to get a bottom feeder like a Cory and maybe a few Endler's as well? Or is that pushing it.

Well since neons are mid swimmers then corys are fine for bottom fish. You will need sand though if you want corys.

Ok, yeah, can plants take root in sand easily? Planning on having some living plants in there.

Endler's are swimmers as well but I don't think they are school fish like Neon's are. Would having say, maybe 2 or 3 Endler's be too much since they are swimmers as well?

Thanks for the helpful responses by the way.

There's a lot of members on this site that know more about stocking than I do, I just find when your sitting on a 10 gallon tank you're very limited in terms of space. :p

Yeah, I just hope that I can get some Neon's and some Endler's.

Thanks anyway.
