Hello, just to introduce myself,
I am from South Yorkshire and have just been given a 3 foot tank (he has a new larger tank) and some accessories, under-gravel filter and a fluval 103 filter, which I have to sort out

I have set my tank out much the same as I did many years ago with under-gravel filter, some plants etc, I have used the gravel which was in the tank originally, I just gave it a quick rinse as he didn't have any problems disease wise. I have left it a week or so to settle in.

So went to an aquatics shop for some fish, HOW MUCH (Yorkshire war cry  ) bought some neon's and a few Chery barbs, a few leopard and zebra things all very small fish. will leave the tank a bit before getting anymore, after reading your post probably Otocinclus.

now I have come to set up my fluval filter, the chap who gave me the tank said he will give me some bacteria start-up, slime he called it.

went on tinternet to look up fluval filter, and found this brilliant forum, and how things have changed, to be able to ask for advice rather than haveing to use trial and error :)

sorry for the long post

Paul

Welcome back to the hobby!
Are you just going to stick with small shoaling fish or do you have some larger feature fish in mind?

Hi, I think you should get the 'slime' in asap, if youv'e got fish in there already. I don't think leaving it a quick is long enough for it to cycle.

I do want shoaling fish but would like some larger fish too, but ones which don't fin nip or eat small fish
I'll have to get some later when the tank has accustomed itself to the fish I have just bought.
But I will need advice on which to buy :)

I had to take a water sample for them to checked before I bought the fish, he said it would be ok for what I bought, in fact he wouldn't sell me anymore, he said to come back when the bacteria had developed in a few weeks and to bring another sample. I told him about this external filter and he told me to get it running as soon as I can...I have some holes to drill in the cabinet and need a longer pipe :(

I'd better get on with it :) thanks for the advice
