Hi, I’m new here. Me & my girlfriend have owned an aquarium for just over 3 weeks, she has already signed up and started posting so I thought I would join too, as I have literally hundreds of questions. I’ll be visiting the beginners forum shortly to post about my first major concern, but I thought I’d write a bit about our tank here for anyone who is interested.
We currently have a 60 litre /16 Gallon tank containing 5 Pearl Danios and 3 Panda Corys. We bought the tank around 3 weeks ago, and set it running for a week before we added our first fish (the Danios), this was after being told by our LPS that the tank would be ready after 7 days due to this ‘fast cycle’ chemical we put in. After a bit more research I now know that this wasn’t exactly true. We added the Corys 7 days later. Since then we have had an ammonia/nitrate spike, which has distressed the Danios quite a bit – we know we put the fish in too early and should definitely have waited before adding the Corys, although as I said the 7-day cycle advice seems to be a common pet store practice. Anyway, it’s been a learning experience at least, and I guess it’s better to get on with trying to make the tank right. Hopefully that’s where some of you guys can help.
