Some good starter plants would be Anubias, Java Fern, Crypts, and Java Moss. You can make quite a stunning tank with those options, if you ask me.

Not all plecos get to a foot or larger. A bristlenose only gets to 5-6in for exaple. Go to the pleco sub-forum in that Catfish section, and there is a pinned topic listing all the plecos that stay under 6 inches.

For me, your tank defo needs some bottom dwellers. If you're looking for something REALLY different, try seeing if you can get hold of some Stiphodon sp. gobies. I picked up some recently at my local World of Water, sold as "Sumatran cobalt blue gobies" or something like that. If World of Water have got them, then it seems likely that the mainstream suppliers have a supply of them. May need to mail order them though.

They are real characters, and can move their heads around with flexible necks. 3 or 4 of them would look awesome in your tank. They will not be able to cope on just dried food in my experience though. They will nibble on bits of flake on the bottom, but prefer frozen daphnia and brine shrimp. They are always interacting with each other though and are great fun to watch.
