Ok so sitting around watching my community tank and Woh!! :-( My male ram starts rubbing himself in the sand??

He swims down quite normally and then turns sidewards in the sand as he's still swimming.

Is there something wrong with him?? or is it normal?

Is he dying?

there is something irritating him causing him to flick/flash in the sand...

have you tested the water for ammonia and nitrites etc?
have you used any cleaning products near the tank?

it could also be down to parasites or some kind of disease, is there any obvious signs of these?

rams can be sensitive fish and prefer higher temps and lower pH water thats very very clean.

He had white spot but treatment finished 4 days ago, could it still be irritating him perhaps?
He's not showing any other signs of illness except this flashing.

Other than a water change is there anything i can do?

are you 100% that it was white spot?
a large water change and substrate clean will do no harm and will remove some nasties if there are any :good:

Him and his friend had little pure white spots on all fins and tail, after 1 day on white spot treatment they seem to have 'dropped' off, so i assume that's what it was.

Watching dragons den maybe they should invent someone that can come to your house to check on poorly fish >D

Thank you for your help

white spot can sometimes be a pain to rid in a tank.... if it is back then try turning the heat up to 30 degrees while treating the fish again this will speed up the lifecycle of the ich and the medication can get best results as the ich will be more active. it might be a good idea to up the airation in the tank while at high temps as oxygen content drops with hotter water

So 50% water change, then if it carrys on or signs come back stick a large air stone in (already have a air disc in) up the temp and re treat...brilliant, your a gem thank you for your help.

no probs. as i said earlier rams do prefer hotter water and lower pH and can be very sensitive to water conditions.
good luck :good:

Are tetra's ok with hotter water? My temp's 27 in all tanks but if i up it to 30 will my tetras get a little poorly? There are all sorts in there most kinds of tetra's, corys, frogs, loach, rams and catfish or do some of them need moving if im uping it?

most fish will tolerate higher temps for short periods, its not ideal for them but neither is whitespot.... moving the fish to another tank will only cause problems especially if it is something very contageous like whitespot as you will then have 2 tanks that need treating. whitespot is like a cold to us and spreads very fast, even if all the fish dont show any signs of it they will have it if another fish is covered
