well, i woke this morning to find the eggs gone. Im not down hearted about it, i know they will take a few efforts to get it right. plus it gives me the chance to remove the other tank mates to a new tank to leave them to it.

if you remove the others it might work, it you leave them in a community tank, I think it very unlikley that you will ever get them to wriggler stage

tbh, i wasnt expecting them to spawn at all. thats not what i got them for. This has kinda thrown my plans for the tanks in the house i had into a little disarry, but hey ho, its the joys of fishkeeping hehehe.

I moved all the yellow wags and some of the corys out this morning. Just waiting for the pH issue to be resolved in the Tropical Chat section and the other discus can come outta there :)

Tap water can be perfect for discus, where I live its way too hard for them. When I kept them I had to use RO water. RO water keeps out many nasties also, but its not necessary if your have the correct water. Breeders in areas with suitable water just use tap water. If want to breed them then if your water has a hardness of below 5dH then the eggs should be able to hatch all other things being to their liking. A happy discus family is great to watch. The ones I had regularly spawned in a busy community tank, they even managed to raise some of the fry a few times managing to keep the angels away, it was a five foot tank that was stuffed with plants though.

Beautiful discus you have, good luck with them.

:good: he he!

guess what, i left the light on last night and they are still there. So from my VERY scientific experiment i can dedecue that the eggs have lasted 1 day longer than last time from leaving the lights on over night :)

good luck.

Mine spawned on monday night, so I can deduce there will be none left by the time I get home :(

One of mine spawned on Sunday evening (aptly named Filter Bob... h'mmm) but doesn't seem to have a proper mate - it's bizarre, she's spawned twice now and neither time has anyone had the remotest interest in her or in fertilizing the eggs - just in eating them.
Eventually one of the others just eats the eggs when she gets bored of them and wanders off. I never thought discus would lay eggs without a mate.
There are 6 in the tank, but none of them act like they fancy Bob....

Finally got an hour or so to spare tonight to get the 3 other discus moved downstairs to the cubeish tank. did the old drip down some airline with a clamp routine to adjust them to the higher pH. they seem to be fine and they are currently making friends with Dave my new discus who has resided in there for the past 2 weeks :)

How did the eggs do?

the first lot were gone overnight and i left the light off. the 2nd lot got to 4 days, dwindling in numbers each day and that was with the lights on each day.

I did a big water change last night, removed the other discus and they are preparing to spawn again... lets hope for a little longer this time. they dont have any other fish to worry about and the lights will be left on 24/7 :)
