Hi can somebody with a bit of knowledge please take a look at this video and tell me what you think (heavily pregnant Platy is best seen 42 secs onwards)

She seems to have been pregnant for ages, at least 4 weeks, tried putting her in birthing tank and nothing seems to be happening.

Also what type of Platys are these?

are you sure these are platys?? how recently did you buy them....they look like balloon mollys to me...young ones. and the "pregnant female" you said is best seen from 42 seconds onward seems to have a pointed anal fin - indicating male!

Hmmm, interesting you say this, when looking at Gold Balloon Molly pictures, I can see they do look very alike.

However I did a bit more searching and found this page, which to me indicates they are Red Platys. Also the anal fin only looks pointy when its swimming, it fans out more when it stops.

Red Platy

These are balloon mollies.

Also the one u refered to is male..

They look like blood red balloon mollies to me and the 1 you mentioned is a male.
Don't wanna sound rude.

I'm still not so sure, the smaller most obviously males are chasing it about and harassing it. You can actually see the smaller platy's trying to do their thing with it. That anal fin is fan like when it is not swimming, the male platy anal fin is pointed even when its not swimming.

Just seems like theres so much going for it to be a female (size of stomach, size of fish and face males are harrassing) against the fact the anal fin appears pointy.

The shape and size of balloon mollies, always look as though they are pregnant because of their shape and are hard at the best of times to tell when they're due to drop...

It looks male to me too...perhaps you can get a pic with its fin out, males will chase other males for dominance over others, and i know my males always has the organ pointing out towards other fish,in the hope of getting lucky i suppose...

Lol it's near on impossible to get a picture that isn't blurry of these little buggers! They don't stop moving for a split second.

On another note though, watch the video carefully between 5 and 7 seconds, the platy stops and the anal fin goes fan like. Make it larger and change it to 1080p if you still can't see.

It still looks like a male to me as this is what my male guppies does when he stops for a couple of mins. Swimming-very pointy, stopping-fanned out a little bit like yours. The other males will be chasing him because they want to be dominant male. idealy if you want to breed them i find that starting with 1m 2-3f is the best then keeping the best colour morphs of the fry and breeding them on. Always make sure you have more females than males.

To be honest I'm not bothered about breeding them, it is just how I bought them from my LFS. Think I will let them just do their thing, they certainly seem happy enough! Thanks for the advice :)

Your welcome and ok but just to warn you because you do have males and females they will breed but the babies might get eaten.

Yeah not a problem, I've got a birth tank and I have read the thread about how to tell if your pregnant fish are ready to drop so I will keep my eye on them :)

Finally got some pics! All of the same Platy. See what you think :)
