Ok, I'm in a dorm and normally the rooms are supposed to be really hot but mine isn't cause it's on the first floor. I have a bunch of 1 gal tanks that are soon going to be occupied from Synirrs babies, but I only have one lamp that I've been using to keep one heated a bit. How do you guys do it cause you can't really get heaters for such small tanks? Any info would be great cause I don't want them to get cold.

Hrmmmm......Putting a heater near the tanks.........Umm Huddling the close together so they gather heat......Umm puttin bottles of warm water in each tank.

Just thoughts

They make heaters for those size tanks. They are 25 watt heaters and all you have to do when you plug it in is to set it at a certain temp. and see what it heats the tank up to and adjust it to 78 by using a thermoeter (or however you spell it) And their you go problem solved. :)

You could put their tanks on top of heating pads, or just give 'em some hot chocolate every morning. :p

I'm of the opinion that if YOU are comfortable, your fish are too. Room temperature works fine in my experience and fluctuation is actually better for them (imo anyway) I believe it makes them hardier.

If it's really cold you can buy a space heater. That's what I use in the fishroom during the winter, only because that room tends to get really cold, but I most likely won't even use one this year due to some rearranging.

Some use those little heating pads that you can buy for reptile tanks. Those are $$$$ though.

A friend of mine keeps her apartment at 68-74'ish and her bettas look fantastic all the time. Always active. I've noticed mine are more sluggish in the hotter months. Unfortunately my insulation is terrible so I couldn't get it that low in here if I tried. My ac has to work overtime just to keep it at 79'ish.

mine with the lamp over are usually 79, but overnight when I don't keep the lamp on it goes between 72-75 and they are fine, but I don't think that the water would warm up that much in the day time without the lamp... Any opinions?

What I do is at night time I take a towel and wrap every tank up at night that doesn't have a heater in it and my bettas are fine. Heck I don't even use heaters for my bettas.

I got a question redbetta, what tanks are you using? and how many? and how big is your dorm room, cause im also living in a dorm room.

Just how cold is it getting in your room? Do you have thermometers in any of your tanks? My guy is in a one gallon without a heater. Room temp works great for him. He's only complained once when the furnace broke at my office one weekend last winter and I came in to find him half-dead at something like 58F :X . He's in my apartment now where I can't control the temp except to open windows or turn on a heater and he's happy, healthy and active. :) I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you're getting extreme temp changes.

btw..where in Canada are you?

Thx for the replys. Um, my room isn't that big but it's not small either .
We are only allowed 10 gals, so right now I have a half gal, which I'm soon getting rid of( oh it's plastic) and a 1.5 g glass vase. I have a 5.5g soon to be occupied, it's an actual aquarium, and then I'll have a few more plastic 1 gals.
I don't know how cold it gets in here, but my fish are at 72F in the morning without the lamp on overnight, and I wonder if that's too cold or not, in the daytime it goes up to 79 with lamp or 72-75 without lamp.
Hope that answered your question. How many do you guys have in your dorms? All together I will have about 8 bettas.

I have never tried these myself and have not idea if they're any good, but since you live in Canada, and in a dorm room, I'm guessing either your room will be quite hot or quite cool (the joys of dorm life in a cold climate....), and you might just want a heater for the winter months.

Reptile heat lamps (the domes with a heat emitting light bulb or non-light ceramic bulb) might be an option, if you have a place to set it up where it won't come into contact with things. This way, it can be on at night without giving off light..... They're not too pricey, if you only buy one or two and set them up to emit over a couple of the small tanks at once.

Both my tanks are 1.5 gals and I find that 25w thermostat heaters work fine. :)

I have two great little 2.5 gal aquarius, they also ahve a bio wheel under the full enclosed hood, which I have modified to make only the slightest current. At first I thought I may need a heater, but did not.

Because they are 'bright' incandescent light which looks like floro, they actually keep the tanks at around 27degrees! So no heater required. I really love these tanks esp cause they are fully enclosed, and the bio wheel, and with the small mod I did they are really the calmest flow. And silent! Because I leave them on for about 15 hours a day, they only drop by 2 degrees at night - which is pretty acceptable and similar to nature. You may want to use that space heater, I actually hagve a plug in oil-filled radiator for my fry room.
