Just wondering how long ,on average,would a heater last.

i put a new one in my 30 gallon tank about 2 years ago and haven't touched it since.Going fine.Just wondering is there an average life-expectancy for them.

im pretty sure Kribensis12 just threw one away that was 30 yrs old

How long's a piece of string. Some brands are better than others. Some people see them fail after a few months and conversly I know people that have been using the same heater for ten years or more.

ive been through quite a few heaters in the past 5yrs+, but thats because i always make that really stupid mistake of forgetting to turn it off when i do a big water change and then it cracks, you would off thought id learned by now!

Of course, we had one in our 29g go into "cook-the-fish" mode. Barely two years old. Fortunately, we caught it in time, but the water temp had to be close to 90*F.

Does anyone know of an alarm or safety device?

i wish i knew! even heaters from the same maker don't seem to have the same life span. true juwel heaters seem to go wrong more often than some. yet, there are people around who have had their juwel heater for many years with no problem. not really any help i know, but if you search, it does seem that all makes of heaters can expire after a short time, both expensive and cheap.
