first off-should this be in hardware?

secondly- i'm getting a new tank and instead of buying a bigger wattage heater can i use my 150w and spare 200w to comfortably heat my tank?

i mean is this common practice or am i insane?

Hi,

If those 2 heaters have enough wattage for the new tank then its a good idea. Most people with large tanks have a heater at either end so the heat is better distributed throughout the tank, also if one breaks you have backup.

Emma :)

Not just will people put two smaller heaters in a larger tank for more even distribution, but it is also a safety measure. If one heater's control breaks and it stays constantly on or constantly off, the other heater can keep the tank pretty close while you remedy the problem. If you have just one heater, and it stays constantly on you may come home to a very warm tank.

Nah, I think it's okay in Chit Chat. Yes it is fine, and reccommended for all the reasons stated above. But I wouldn't do it on a small tank - what size is it?
