hi for xmas i got a juwel rekord 120 tank it came with a 100 watt heater and a fliter. i think the heater mihgt be fultey as the temp keeps changeing.
its been running since xmas day.

Is this heater the right wattage for a 120 l tank?

if its not what size heater do i need to get?

thanx adam

It should be ok. 120 liters should be around 30 gallons.

Perhaps a 150 watt or 200 watt heater would be better but i forgot what the basic rule is.

100 watts is plenty for the tank unless the room is unusually cold, in which case a higher wattage heater is best. Does your heater have a thermostat?

I think the rule of thumb is generally 5 watts per gallon, and so a 150 W heater might be better suited for your sized tank.

If you've got a room that stays consistenly warm, though, a somewhat weaker heater will do you fine.

One tip: What kind of heater do you have? If you have an HoB filter, like a penguin, place the heater where the water re-enters the aquarium. That way, the heated water is circulated at a much more economical rate than if it was farther away.
You could also put the heater above an airstone or something, as that would probably do the same thing.
