Bit of a problem here guys i hope you can help me out....i used to have a small 60 litre tank before with a 100w heater and that did the job perfectly of keeping the water at the chosen temp

i recently upgraded my tank to a 130l setup the aqua one 620T....and obviously i was given a new heater...the same as my old one but it was a more powerful 200w i think

but i have set the heater to 27 degrees....and the water has not heated up for days now above 20-22.....so i just turned it up to 30 degrees and now the water thermometer reads about 24....the light only stays on for a very little time...and then cuts out...and i never see it turn back on

is this a fault with the heater or have i done something wrong?.....it is positioned exactly how it says in the book and its the same heater as i had before which was perfect but just a higher power model...

any ideas what to do as this is not good

Some heaters just aren't calibrated right at the factory to the settings on the knob. It's probably not you're fault that it's not heating up to the right setting. Did you recently buy it, or do you have a receipt or manufacturer's warranty? You can either completely ignore the numbers on the dial and turn it up however much until the tank's thermometer says the right temperature, or return the thing and get a new one that works. I'd recommend seeing if you can exchange for a new (and working) one. Safer that way, I think.

The guy told me not to use my old one with the new tank as its not the right wattage for it....otherwise i would have tried that...

also yea its brand new out of the box a few days ago...i still have the receipts so i might exchange it

could it just be a dodgy heater or do you reckon its the actual model thats not right or something ..i dont want to be stuck in the same problem for any more time as its driving me crazy lol

Yeah if you have the receipts then, definitely exchange it. I would guess it's just that one heater that's messing up, unless you got a really cheap, made in China heater or something, then it might be the whole brand that's off.

thank you very much for the quick help...ill be taking it back tomorrow and seeing what they say...it was from maidenhead aquatics and wasnt cheap !

No reason not to have two heaters in a tank set to the same temp, you could use your old 100W and a new 100W either end if you wanted to. Just be aware that 1 x 100W on its own might struggle to heat that much water.

If its sold with the tank and its still under guarantee then they have to change it. Hit them with 'its consumer law' if they refuse.

Hope you get it sorted.

thanks guys...just phoned them up and they said they will exchange it or refund it anytime i like as its got something like a year guarantee...

he did say though the heater always has to be a few degrees higher than the water temp to keep it stable and heated depending on where the tank is....he says some heaters in his shop are at 40c to keep the water at 27c....

is this correct?

as i only started this thread as my old tank....firstly it was smaller and it was in my bedroom which is fairly hotter than downstairs where my new tank is....also if i turned the heater to 27 my water stayed at 27....but maybe the room had a part to play in keeping the water hot whereas my new location i will have to keep the heater up...

what i dont want it suddenly the heater actually heating to around 31 degrees as thats not good either lol but at the moment the heater is on 31 and the water has been a stable 27 for a day now
