My daughter's science teacher admits that he knows nothing about fish but he has asked all of the kids to bring guppies into the class so that they can study them.

I said that I wasn't going to let my dd take any of my beautiful snake-eyes guppies in so that they could be dumped into an unheated, undeclorinated jar, so I offered to take one of my extra 5g tanks in and set it up for her.

Question: the only spare heater I've got is a 150w. Is there any problem to using it?

Hi,

Only thing I can think of is that the heater will/might be too big for the 5g tank - they're normally meant to be fully submerged otherwise will break.

Anyone else, please agree/correct me.....

Nah, it fits the tank fine, it has it's own plastic casing to protect the tube and I'll just lay it across the bottom.
My concern is: will it heat the water up too quickly and over heat the fish?

Most heaters are heater stats that only turn on when the water goes below the temperature you set. It will be perfectly fine in the tank, but i wouldn't recommend laying it on the gravel, even if it does have one of those plastic guards, those are to stop silly fish like plecs and synos burning themselves :/ .

I've put it on the back of the tank with the suction cups and set it for 72 degrees, hopefully that will do the trick.

Thanks for the replies! It's a real help to know I won't be cooking my fish!
