My heater is currently postioned diagonaly (sp) on the back of the tank, but this looks unsightly. Would it be ok to move it on to the side of the tank?
Thanks!
Chris

Hi Chris, you can put the heater wherever you want, I always stick mine right in one corner (upright) and its a lot more hidden, esp if you have a planted tank. I have a powerhead and an external filter so there is a fair bit of current ensuring the water is a consistent temp throughout. :good:

My instructions talked about a minimum distance they reccomended in between the heater and the corner of the tank, however there isn't actually a distance written in the instructions it's just shown in a 'don't put it too close to the corner' type image.

If it's fully submersiable then you can lay it down on the bottom of the aquarium at the back which could hide it nicely.

Ours is in the corner, we just make sure no plants or gravel are touching it... as per the instructions. It's placed upright and submerged, except for a little bit of the top... but it's above the water line marked on the outside. So far it works great.

Make sure it's somewhere near or in the currant, or you'll have a pocket of heat around the heater and the rest of the tank will be cooler. :)

it may also be worth putting it off vertical, as the water heats it rises, so if you place the heater to true vertical the water will rise around the thermostat, causing it to switch off, it assumes the water is heated, only to turn back on, seconds later. true this has no effect on the overall heating of the tank. but it does drasticall effect the ecconmy of the heater, whilst the heater is heating up it is wasted energy!! so if it swithches on less often, however long for, it is more efficient..

I moved my heater to the 1 corner of the tank aswell adn found now that the temp i set it to the termometer is actually displaying aswell.Normally was about 2 degrees C out.So i think its suppose to be upright.

@d3tained you may be right but i dont follow you? is it now saying the same as your external temp display? suppose it makes sense that if the heater is some distence from you external display the temps would differ. could it be that it is closer to your temp guage?

just done a search, it would seem that the position of "most" heaters is up to you, though hydor insist that their heaters a kept vertical, yet another insists that vertical is the correct position, whilst adding that it will work just as well in the horisontal format???? most seem to say whatever is best for you.

I always put mine vertical and straight in one corner, I have a lot of current so the water is being evenly heated. I haven't experienced what you are mentioning, my heater seems to be very rarely on due to room ambient temperature alraedy being high enough, itl'l be interesting to see if it keeps clicking on and off if our lounge gets colder! Sorry, what i ment is the following.

My heater used to be scewish in the one corner and set to 24 ( Heater dont have temp meter in it )

My temp meter will then give me reading of 25 -26 which was confusing.

What ive done is put my heater totally vertically in the same corner it was in and set to 24 and now my temp meter, still in same place reads water at 24.
