Ok...so I have a 55 gallon tank and a few weeks ago during a water change I forgot to unplug the heater and yeah...it broke. So later on I bought another heater...I forgot which brand..I had never used it before, and it seemed to not work for a while...but I just kept turning it up little by little and eventually it manged to go up 5 degrees (from 55 or 60) and since I need the water warmer..I turned it up a little more the next day...and while at the computer I heard glass break...and I went and looked and the heater was filling with water.

So yesterday after I got off work I bought another one, the same brand I had in there was first time...and the same brand that I use in all of my tanks (tetra whisper). I turned it all the way down and dropped it in the water to sit for 15 minutes before plugging it in. After plugging it in the little light came on, of course...becuase the water was cold..so I left it. This morning the light was off so I set it to 78 (the one with the little arrow) becuase thats the ultimate goal right now. The light came on and I walked away...but noticed that the water was still a little chilly.

So, 30 minutes ago I walked up to feed my fish and noticed the light was off and felt the water...still a bit chilly. My digital thermometer is crap, I know this. so I used the thermometer from one of my other tanks, and it read 62 degrees. So I turned the heater up a little more...the light came on..and then a minute later went off. A little more..the same thing....finally I turned it all the way up...and the same thing! Why the hell is the light turning off when the heater is cranked all the way up and the water is 62!?

This is complete crap. Someone tell me what is going on here.

Have you checked the thermomiter to make sure it is accurate? if you have a second one that may help. On a side note, I have a heater that is supposed to be marked for different temperatures, but it is totally off. You may also need another heater to help. I have 2 heaters in my 40 gallon, i see them both on at different times, which is wierd, but it seems to work

A 200 watt heater should be able to heat up a 55 gallon tank from 60 degrees just fine, I shouldn't need another one. Yes I know the thermostat on heaters are off...but the problem is that the heater is turning OFF when it should be on. Yes the thermometer is accurate. I have a thousand of them :p Plus I can tell its cold becuase of the feel of the water.

They may have had a run of bad heaters, it does happen. A friend of mine bought 4 Jager heaters, they all died one by one within a few months. The replacements worked fine. Try another brand from the same store, or go to a different store if that is the brand of heater you prefer.
