Heater In A Compartment With The Filter?

My sister picked up her tank yesterday and I'm helping her with it, it's second hand. We were looking for the heater annd discovered it in a compartment next to the filter. It's all in one big box. Is it ok like that?

sounds like a Juwel tank, they have a heater compartment in the filter box.

yeah Marie its fine, the filter circulates the water past the heater so it gets heated while inside the filter box. Means less equipment in the tank

Thanks caz. Do you think she'd be ok adding a few fish today. Not loads just a small shoal or something. The tank was running 8 months and fully cycled and the guy emptied it when she collected it and she took it straight home and filled it and put it all on. She's got a kit and we tested this morning and it's 0ppm for amonia nd nitrite. The water is crystal clear.

Was the media still wet? If so you'd be fine to add some fish, what's the tank volume?

oh yes it was still wet. The tank is 120 litres

Do you know how long it had been out of the water for? Personally I feel that you'd be fine to add 6-10 fish, just keep an eye on water parameters and do water changes as and if necessary.

About an hour tops. She only wants to add a few fish maybe even one or a small shoal. Nothing more for now.

Yeah that'd be fine, but as before just keep an eye on the water parameters, the good thing about the bacteria that colonise in our filters is that it takes quite a while for them to die when good isn't present, so any die off should be minimal.
