Im slowly working on getting my first tank up and running. Today I finished cleaning/washing all the substrate and now have that in the tank..

My next dilema is where to place the heater.. Its too tall to stand upright as about 2-3 inchs of the heater are out of the water.. So I am planning on placing the heater reasonable close to the filter intake running parallel to the substrate (approx 1inch above substrate)...

Im wanting it down low so I can hide the heater behind some plants and close to the intake so the "warm" water to filtered down to the other end of the tank (where the spray bar is located)..

Is there a better/ideal location for the heater?

Cheers

I've read and seen in my very well run lfs that heaters should be stuck on diagonally in order to distibute heat correctly.

...

"Is there a better/ideal location for the heater?" In a "Sump" .

But when this option was not available for me I usually did it like the way you discribed and had a powerhead aimed somewhat to push the rising warm water through out the tank. This of course was after the heater was blocked from view with a large rock so all one could see was the cord.

placement of the heater, now there is a subject, that has been seen before!!! first check how the manufacturer states it should be mounted. Hagen insist that their heaters are placed vertically, others say you must place them that way, but admit elsewhere that it up to you!! in practice it isnt of much importance, unless you are working with big multi heater tanks. my main consern is the size of your heater. what wattage is it, what size is your tank? my reason is this, if the heater has a high wattage, though it will have no problems keeping you tank at the right temp, if it failes in some way, if it has too higher rating it will cook your fish in quick time.

I think that's a great location. I've heard the debate to place them diagonally before, but I've tested water temps at different areas and there is no actual benefit I saw with this placement. So you can place it however you want really.

I have tanks with heaters vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. As long as you have decent circulation place it where it is least noticed. I have many tanks where it is just tossed in, not even attached to the side. This lets me do water changes without unplugging it, i just stick it a little further down in the tank.
