Hi just wondering does anyone use heat mats.Do you need a thermostat or arw they ok without one? thanks!

As with any heating device I would take the precaution to have a thermometer/thermastat and keep a close eye on it until you know how well it works.

yeah i have a heat mat my boyfriend gave me that was used for reptiles. im kind of wondering the same thing would that be ok if i used it for under my betta tank?

i know you can use them under betta tanks but im not sure if i need a thermostat.I might buy one and then do some exsperimenting to see if it stays at a constant temp without going up and down.

My experience with heat mats that are normally used for reptiles, is that they tend to stay a constant temp - never had an increase or decrease in the heat my mat gave out when I had my gecko.

Do not use heatmats on fish tanks. If they are directly touching the glass they will eventually crack.I doubt much heat would go through the tank atall.A small heater is the cheaper option anyway :good:

I've seen like a heat mat for a tank, not sure if it was one you submerge though, for the life of me I can't remember where I saw it either.

This is a pointless post...

yeah you can use heat mats on fish tanks but is recommended that you have a thermostat installed good if you have live plants but thats about it pain in the backside if it breaks have to empty fishtankto get it from underneath might aswell buy a small heater for what its worth

cheers dane

but i want to heat a few tanks and my dad said no more tanks but if i can find a way to get round it then ill try it lol.ill test it and have a spare heat mat ready.

i just put a heat mat underneath my betta tank a few hours ago, i will tell you if it works tomorrow :good:

ok well..... i kept the heating mat underneath my 5 gallon and for the first 5 hours it didnt seem to be too hot at all but when i woke up this morning the temperature had inclined to probably around 90 degrees! i do ont think the heating mat is a good idea at all. good thing i didnt have any fish in the tank while i was testing it out
