Head Butting Sand?

After i took down alphies background off his tank he went sort of scared and hid around the bottom, so today ive stuck up a magazine page but hes still acting odd, he keeps going in one corner and pushing his face into the sand and hes breathing rapidly? I'm feeling worried about him head butting the sand? Theres like a whole in the sand where his head been and hes acting all odd, like going in the plants and then struggling to get out of them, no signs of white spot or any other disease? Could he just be getting upset that i took away his background and didnt but one up until a few hours later? Hes always been insecure without a background but i had to take the old one down as it got wet and went all weird. Should i put him in my QT tank for a bit to let him cool off as theres nothing in there, no substrate or anything or is he best just in his own home?

Hiya
Try a water change of about 50% and then see if he improves

Also, once the IAL have arrived, then add some in, to de-stress
The background will taake him time getting used to so i wouldn't worry about it

I can't do a water change today well ive not done much today as ive been having ladie problems lol so just been taking it easy! Will do one later if i can
