I have some Celesteal Pearl Danios, a small Yamato Shrimp, 2 RCS and a larger ghost shrimp in one of my (densly planted) tanks.  Yesterday both of the RCS got sucked into the smallest inlet of my filter and survived.  After putting some net mesh over the inlets on the filter another RCS soon dissapeared.

Then this morning one RCS was very happy whizzing all over the place and decided to explore inside a boat ornament, I just looked inside and the ghost shrimp has killed and half eaten him :-( I dont think I can face keeping him in the tank.  Sorry - Came here to vent my frustration, I want a peaceful community.

It's always upsetting when our little fishy friends don't get along with each other. I was really upset when my african buttefly fish and gouramis didn't get along at first.
I'm sorry for your loss. : (

Its really sad but I guess its the nature of them. With my luck so far I am going to stick with the more peaceful shrimp.

Jeeso, the last thing you expect from a shrimp tank is death and destruction!

Looks like the ghost has to go if you're aiming for peace and tranquility in there. Your RCS will hide very well and some might re-appear, but, unfortunately some might not...I can't account for 3 out of 10 of my fire red cherries, even after stripping the tank...

You've done the right thing putting a netting over the filter inlet, though.

Good Luck

p.s. I want some galaxy rasboras as well!

I know, thought my main community tank would be the only potential problems but its been this shrimp tank.  I think he has eaten both of the RCS, they were always on the plants before all the time.  The ghost has now been removed so I will get some more RCS today.

I do recommend the Rasbora's (although very expensive from my LFS), they are very shy but if you spend enough time with them they get used to you.

Sorry to hear about your woes with the shrimp.
I had a lovely little group of sparkling gouramis that happily ate their way through a lot of my cherry shrimp, even the adults that they couldn't eat in one gulp they dismembered.
If you can get them a good fish to have with shrimp ( also if you have the tank room) is Spotted Blue Eyes and or Threadfin rainbows, these guys have tiny mouths and are only a threat to young shrimp. But in a well planted tank young shrimp will always find a way of hiding and surviving to sub adult/ adult size.

Thanks for the support.  I currently have some Celesteal Pear Danio's (galaxy rasbora) in there with them which are tiny and harmless.  There seems to be a shortage of RCS in all my LFS at the moment, strange.

Ask them to order them in for you!

Sigh, I think that is going to have to be the way to do it, I have no problem with charges if they are okay in the post.  Just picked up the last one from my local P@H and it did not even survive the journey back.

Well, I've used the easishrimp guy twice now with no casualties, good service, good communication. And I've just made my first order from Kesgrave Tropicals (not shrimp, though) which should arrive tomorrow, so I'll let you know how that goes...!

Ah, always sad to lose one or shrimps or fish. Unfortunately that does happen. One of my RCS died 2 days ago, don't know why really, could either be down to stress of moving to my new tank or simply old age. Another one of my shrimps is missing also, I fear it gone throught my filter intake! Will get one of these filter nets to try to stop this happening again.

I will be buying some more shrimps, my local Maidenhead Aquatics regularly stock these RCS as they are popular sellers.

Hope your next batch of RCS goes to well and do re-home your ghost or get another small tank just for ghost shrimps....

FishCrazy, Great to get a heads up on a good shop, they have quite a nice selection, would love some more of the interesting ones in the future.  My long term plan is breeding Cardinal Shrimp, however I will stick with the RCS for now.  What have you got coming from Kesgrave Tropicals?

Ch4rlie, It was Maidenhead Aquatics (in Stratford-Upon-Avon) I got my RCS from (the last two there) - They had a brilliant selection.  For my filter I cut up one of my silky nets and used the fabric from that to 'modify' my filter.

Good new is the RCS that I just picked up, although floating on his back has starated moving so fingers crossed he was just playing dead.

Great tip! Might just do that for filter net. Thanks

I have heard some shrimps do do this for some reason. I hoped that would be the case when I picked up my shrimp when on his back, but definitely dead! Oh well!

Cannot imagine my tank without shrimps now and am considering getting a small Nano Cube just for a specialist shrimp at some point in near future hopefully. Great little critters!

They are simply brilliant, so active (when they are not eaten).  I have my 48L on my desk (I work from home) so can watch them all day, very distracting!!
